I played Skyrim and then after some days I played Dear Esther. I found that the caves looked more realistic and good in Dear Esther as compared to the caves in Skyrim. Even the framerate never went below 60 fps in Dear Esther. Framerate of 60 fps for such outstanding visuals is great work done by Valve.

The reason why Dear Esther maintains framerate of 60 fps is because it is built on Source engine. Source engine is not a resource consuming engine. The only problem with the game is the loading screen. The loading between two areas is the only part which requires much resource. If proper resources are available on system, then it will run with maximum quality setting at same framerate.

The caves in Dear Esther are amazing. The caves have more than usual Stalagmites and stalactites. The natural feel of being in a cave the realistic concentration of ground mass gave a good effect. To add to its beauty, the rooms and chambers were perfectly proportioned. The only thing that I did not like about the caves was the amount of light. It was more than needed. The developers should have given a torch or lantern to explore the caves.

The reason for framerate not going less than 60 fps is because the Source engine has optimized the content of game excellently. It manages the objects which should be seen and which not perfectly. The games which require high resources and don’t maintain fps, they render the objects which won’t be seen by the player. Speaking about the caves, the stalagmites and stalactites are low poly objects added to the environment. They are designed so that they maintain the level of detail using textures while keeping the poly count low.

Another reason for game being so well optimized while giving high and consistent framerate is because it does not have advanced physics. It does have colliding objects, animated AI or objects. This saves the resources requires rendering dynamically animating objects.
