I am also looking for this particular thing. I am not able to use the custom or private game. also due to this particular problem I am not able to get TF2 and Portal items into the online games since I am not able to open the darn crates. I have already tried to open the crates into local but they are not supposed to transfer the online account of mine.

Well according to me you will not required any ports if you are using any of the steam version as it is being used by their own server. However I am not aware about the other servers.

I have seen lots of people who are having the same query which you have stated over here. I have searched on the Google to figure out the idea on this particular matter. you require to do port forwarding and you will only require if you are supposed to use the GameSpy. So you should consider the point which I have mentioned over here and I am hoping that it will be useful to you.
