data execution prevention has stopped dead space 2 from working error

Everything has been hunky-dory up to now but i've reached a point in the game and I get nothing but a CTD and an error message saying that "data execution prevention has stopped dead space 2 from working" I've been through the settings and tried to turn off DEP but when I try it tells me that it cannot be turned off for this applicaion.

Tried all the normal vista ails (run as admin etc..) and I'm at a loss.

It's the point where you leave the room after having to use the bird loving engineer's corpse to open a door, i've done the whole section and i'm now trying to exit through the airlock to the zero gravity area.
I hack the door and walk down the corridor but when I try to open the door I get CTD and the error.

Help me Obi wan, you're my only hope...

    Thanks in advance

Have you tried to delete the UserSettings.xml in C:\Users\"Put User Name Here"\AppData\Roaming\Dead space 2\Settings before you start the launcher. This is the utmost solution for the data execution prevention for dead space 2 game. Another thing you could do is follow the below method:

1.Right-click on dead space 2.exe on the desktop
    2.Switch over to Compatibility tab
3.Under 'Compatibility Mode', highlight Windows XP Service Pack 2
    4. Save and exit

Already had the xp compatibility on and I can't find that xml file anywhere.
There isn't a dead space 2 folder in my roaming folder...

If at all you are having the trouble with the DEP then you can try to do one thing. You can disable it for some time or say when you are playing the game. If you are so desperate to play dead space 2 then I am of the opinion that it is the most optimal choice with which you can go here. Just follow the steps below. Make a right click on My Computer and then go to the Properties tab there. Navigate to the Advanced tab and then simply go to Performance section and select Settings within it. Now you will see a window getting opened you can select Data Execution Prevention tab there and then select the second option that says Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select. Now after this you will have to hit the Add button and add the programs that you want to run without DEP working on it.

You can try to disable DEP / NoExecute Protection to fix Random Windows Explorer crashes. You will need to disable it and reboot, which should cure some of the crashes:

    1. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator".

    2. If asked for permission to run Windows Command Processor, click on Allow.

    3. At the command prompt, type in "bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff" (without the quotes).

    4. You should receive a message saying "Operation Completed Successfully".

    5. Restart the computer, DEP / No Execute should now be disabled.

Thx ninja but no dice, crash at the same place just no DEP error.

Event viewer gives faulting module unknown...

How do I turn DEP back on now I know that it isn't that causing the crash?

Well, buddy i would like to know the exact system configuration of your system first. because as per my search this error is probably the cause of your graphics card driver. BTW, which video card are you using ? If you are using Nvidia , than there is some settings that you need to go through once you are done updating your graphics driver. You need to reset the profile in nHancer settings under nvidia control panel.

Re: data execution prevention has stopped dead space 2 from working error

Have you tried disabling DEP from another method that is disabling it via control panel or turn it off from the boot.ini permanently, if not then follow the below steps:

    • Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    • Under Pick a category, click Performance and Maintenance.
    • Under or Pick a Control Panel icon, click System.
    • Click the Advanced tab, and in the Startup and Recovery area, click Settings.
    • In the SystemStartup area, click Edit.
    • In Notepad, click Edit and then click Find.
    • In the Find what field, type /noexecute and then click Find Next.
    • In the Find dialog box click Cancel.
    • Replace the policy_level (for example, "OptIn" default) with "AlwaysOff" (without the quotes).
      • WARNING: Be sure to enter the text carefully. Your boot.ini file switch should now read:
      • /noexecute=AlwaysOff
    • In Notepad, click File and then click Save.
    • Click OK to close Startup and Recovery.
    • Click OK to close System Properties and then restart your computer.

This setting does not provide any DEP coverage for any part of the system, regardless of hardware DEP support.
    Verifying DEP is Disabled
    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Under Pick a category, click Performance and Maintenance.
    3. Under or Pick a Control Panel icon, click System.
    4. Click the Advanced tab.
    5. In the Performance area, click Settings and then click Data Execution Prevention.
    6. Verify that the DEP settings are unavailable and then click OK to close Performance Settings.
    7. Click OK to close System Properties then close Performance and Maintenance.

Isn't that the same as the bcdedit command line?

I'm no longer convinced that it's dep causing the crash. Drivers are the latest and i've got through the game problem free up to now. I haven't changed anything...

Nope, that wasnt the same as bcedit command line, the method that I have given you is disabling DEP via control panel or turning it off from the boot.ini. And to be precise, the game should run fine with the geforce 8600 card that you have. Download Driver Sweeper software and install it in your pc. Go into safe mode and uninstall every graphics drivers that you could and then launch Driver Sweeper software and pick up all the remaining graphics driver and remove it once again. Boot to normal mode and install the latest version of nvidia graphics driver again and check whether you are able to play the game or not.

Ok I do not have an edit option in my startup and recovery. Do you know the name of the file to be edited? Could I do it though other means?
