There must be some problem with the version of the game which is installed on the computer. Any application which is installed on the computer, has lot of files associated to it. If any of the file which is associated to the game is missing or corrupt then the game will not work. Uninstall the game and remove all the files/keys which are related to the game. Once all the traces of the game are removed from the game, reboot the system and see if the same problem persists.

Check if the game which you are trying to play is supported by the operating system which is installed on the computer or not. If the game is not supported by the operating system then the game will either not work at all or will give some problems while running. The list of all the supported games is available on the official website of Microsoft. If the game is not supported by the operating system then there is nothing much you can do about it.

Internet connection which is required for playing the games online should be very good. If the internet connection is not good then the server will not be able to communicate with the client computer properly which will give rise to the error message which you are facing. Hence check if the internet connection is good enough to play the games online. To check the internet connection, visit the website speedtest.net and run the online tests. The results of the test will give you exact idea of the internet performance while playing the game.

Is there any firewall installed on the computer? Any security software when installed on the computer blocks all the unknown traffic coming on the computer. Sometimes due to this tendency, the traffic desired by the user is also blocked. If the traffic of the game is blocked, it will create such problems. Hence disable the firewall completely or move the process of the game to the trusted applications list. See if it helps.

Try checking the configuration of the router which is providing the internet connection to the network. For playing some games online the configuration of the router has to be proper. If the router is not configured properly then the game cannot be played online. Login to the router and check the configuration. If there are any changes to be made, make the changes and then save it. Reboot the router and see if the game can be played or not.

If there are lot of processes running on the computer at the same time then the game is bound to lag while playing. For every process to run on the computer, some memory and CPU usage. Hence if there are many processes running on the computer at a same time then the game will suffer some lag. Therefore before starting the game, see if there are any processes running on the computer. Open the task manager and go to processes tab. Terminate all the processes which are unwanted and taking up lot of memory space. After terminating all the processes, check the performance of the game.
