    3D games crashing on Linux

    Hi,
In my friends PC 3D games are crashing on launch. The most basic example for that is CS. The PC has Linux operating system. I think some of the game files does not work or compatible with Linux. He also has a ATI Radeon GPU support which makes me more confused. Does I have to do some settings from the BIOS part for the GPU to render the graphic or the issue lies in something else.

That is right. There are majority of cards which crashes due to SELinux. Some of them are RADEON X1900, 1800, 160, 1300, 700, 600, 550, 300, X1800, 9800, FireGL V7350, V330, X1-128, V7300, etc. series, RADEON X1800 series, etc. If you have any of this range then the OpenGL accelerated application will not work here. The programs also has gflrxinfo, glxinfo, or glxgears.

To fix this issue you have to deal with the SELinux in your Linux system. For that you have to change /etc/sysconfig/selinux policy and set the value to disabled. Then you can try back to work those games again. But if you are not aware of how to stop this then you will have to switch to non opengl applications. You must now the basic fundamentals of Linux working.

I don't think there is any need of entering the System BIOS and change the configuration of the GPU. There is no need of doing this. But on the other hand configuring the BIOS can optimize your system performance. But that needs a better knowledge of using the BIOS settings. If you are not so aware about the different settings then leave it as it was.

It is better recommended that you must not enter your BIOS and change the settings without any prior experience. The GPU settings does not really deals with that. Improper configuration can make your system unstable from the hardware part. Better check your system manual for doing any changes and visit the manufacturers site for more information on settings.
