ATI Video Card causes NFS Shift to Crash Randomly

I have installed a newly purchased ATI Radeon HD 5970 512 MB video card on my desktop computer as I was earlier using an nVidia 256 MB video card. But instead of my system running faster I am unable to play NFS Shift. After I have installed this new ATI Radeon HD 5970 video card NFS shift tends to hang and sometimes randomly crashes and my system reboots automatically.

Disable both Visual Themes and Desktop Composition

I also had this same problem when I upgraded my graphic card from 256 MB to 512 MB. But I was nVidia Graphic card in both cases. And the same graphic card worked well when I used it on another computer so I though it to be an error with Need for Speed: Shift. I performed the following:
    1. Place your mouse cursor on shift.exe and right click on it.
    2. Go to the Compatibility Tab.
    3. Mark the Disable desktop composition as well as the Disable visual theme check boxes.
    4. Click on Apply and OK.
    5. Now try to launch Need for Speed: Shift and the game should proceed without any errors.

    Catalyst 9.9 drivers for ATI

This can be because the you are missing on a ATI Driver. My suggestion is that you browse for the ATI Catalyst 9.9 drivers and install them on your computer. After the installation is complete restart your computer. Also try to adjust your desktop screen resolution by right clicking on desktop and going to Properties > Settings, as this may be also because of improper screen resolution.

    Remove graphicsconfig.xml of NFS- Shift

There are a number of reasons that can cause your games to crash or freeze randomly. I do not think that it is an issue with your graphic card either. As I am also using the ATI Radeon HD 5970 graphic card for playing games on my computer. But to fix the random crash problem you can try the following steps:
    • Open the NFS- Shift Directory.
    • Delete the graphicsconfig.xml file.
    • You need to Re-Configure the graphics after starting the game
    • Once done, exit and restart the NFS- Shift agin.

    Reinstall Need foe Speed SHIFT

From your description it seems that the graphic card is responsible for the Need foe Speed SHIFT game crashing. But I would suggest you to first verify it. First of all you need to uninstall the current game copy from your computer and reinstall Need foe Speed SHIFT. If still the game crashes or lags ten switch to some other graphic card. If the game works well then you will have to replace the graphic card.
