Problem while updating steam on Windows Xp

I'm having a P4 machine on which i had installed Windows Xp. Now the problem is that whenever i try to play Day of Defeat game on my machine, steam automatically keeps trying to update the game on my machine. When i try update it, it can not past 0%. Can any one tell me that why i'm having problem while updating steam on Windows Xp? Does any body knows about it? Please provide me the correct solution for the above issue. Any kind of help on the above issue would be appreciated.

Could be a problem with bandwidth on the internet. Have you tried go Start then All Programs and found it in the list and Selected it and on the right click on something there? It sounds like you either haven't created a Steam account, or haven't told Steam to connect to it.

I have the same problem. Steam and Half-Life 2 are so many gigabytes of wasted disk space to me now until they fix it. Ensure that Steam is fully closed (kill it in the Task Manager if necessary). Delete the "ClientRegistry.blob" fine in your Steam folder. Run Steam again. Seems to be the general fix for these sorts of things.

Try reinstalling steam. This new update seems to have all sorts of issues. Or go to the Steam support website and contact them, because i could not find the error you have in one of the list. You need to run the following code:
