Computer keeps on freezing.Help please

when i play games such as team fortress 2, counterstrike source, or WoW will freeze. when i play low end games such as dungeon fighter online it's not a problem. the freezing happens randomly and sometimes it wont freeze at times at others it will. when it freezes it repeats the sound it was just playing over and over again and i have to force restart it. When i first received the computer this never happened but im almost certain there are no viruses causing this since i never got into that stuff and also use Avast anitvirus.
Some computer stuff:
proccesor: intel(R) Core 2 quad cpu Q6700 @ 2.66GHz(4cpus),~2.7GHz
memory: 2814MB RAM
Display: NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GSO

Might be over heating. Go into your BIOS setup and make sure all the timings for you CPU and memory are set according to the specifications for your CPU and memory. Make sure all your fans are working. Make sure CPU & heatsink are attached properly. There are such ways that can help you solve or bypass this problem, you need to upgrade to higher memory of RAM. Due to the cause of freezing this might help. Increasing more RAM is never a bad idea. It's only a bad idea if you upgrade your RAM too much.
