    How to obtain ScummVM

Basically you have two choices on how to get ScummVM: either you download one of the binaries or you can compile it yourself from source. For beginners, It is strongly recommend using our prebuilt binaries.

You can download official binaries of ScummVM from our downloads page. Go there with your favorite web browser and download the binary for your platform. If none is available, you may have to build ScummVM yourself. Alternatively, some third parties are providing unofficial ScummVM binaries for further platforms, but naturally, I can not make any statements about the quality of such unofficial builds - use them at your own risk!

    Re: Scummvm dreamcast

Nintendo don't want you to run ScummVM on your DS. They control which companies can make games on the DS, and there is an expensive process to go through in order to be licensed. Having to pay for this would prevent me from giving away ScummVM for free.

So, the result is that to run ScummVM on your DS you'll need an unofficial card reader. There are many of these, and all are different. Popular models at the time of writing are the R4DS and the M3DS Real, but many different models work. You need to buy one of these, and at MicroSD card to go with it.

There are also slot-2 card readers which fit into the bottom slot on your DS, usually used for Game Boy Advance games. These are less common these days, and although they have certain advantages, the details of these are beyond the scope of this website. Information on these is quite easy to find by searching.

Once you have your card reader and a MicroSD card, you will also need a copy of the game you want to run. ScummVM can run a large variety of games, but you must own a real boxed copy of the game. These games are still under copyright, and it is illegal to copy them from a friend or download them from the Internet without paying. The exception to this are the three Revolution Software games. These are 'Beneath a Steel Sky', 'Lure of the Temptress' and 'Flight of the Amazon Queen'. Revolution have kindly allowed us to give these games away for free. You can download them from the main ScummVM site at the ScummVM downloads page

If you have a modern card reader, like an M3 Real or R4DS, getting ScummVM to run on your card is as simple as:
    • Copy the scummvm NDS files on your MicroSD card using your PC card reader
    • Copy the games you want to play onto your MicroSD card in any location, one per folder
    • Boot the DS with the MicroSD card and card reader inserted
    • Run the relevent build for the game you want to play (see 'Which games are compatible with ScummVM DS' below.
    • Click 'Add Game'. Select the folder where your game is stored. Click 'OK'. Click 'OK' in the settings dialog.
    • Click 'Start'.

    list of International Game Titles.

    Adding a game

Before you can play a game using ScummVM, you first need to add it to the Launcher.

Your game will run more smoothly if you copy all the files from the original disk(s) (whether floppy or CD) into a folder on your hard-drive.

Click on the "Add Game..." button on the right-hand side of the Launcher.

You will now be presented with a file browser. You should use this browser to locate the directory in which the files from your game's disks are located. Double click on the name of a directory to go into it, and use the "Go up" button to go back up one level. Once you are in the correct folder, click the "Choose" button.

If ScummVM detected the game correctly, it will now display a dialog box which lets you change various settings about the game, including the name that appears in the main window of the Launcher. There are six tabs full of settings to change, and these are discussed later on in the configuration section, but you don't need to change any of them. To finish adding your game, just click the "OK" button.

You've added your first game to ScummVM. To play it now, just select the game you want to play and click on the Start button.

    Removing a game

To remove a game from the ScummVM Launcher, just select the game you want to remove and click the "Remove Game" button on the right-hand side. ScummVM will ask you whether you are sure you want to remove it, so click yes to remove it. Note that this will not delete the game files from your hard drive: you can easily re-add it again later.

    re: need information on Scummvm

The best is the Scummvm Dreamcast ScummVM was also ported to the Dreamcast platform. The Dreamcast port uses it's own custom Graphical User Interface, which automatically scans the disc for games, and adds the games to the list through ScummVM's built-in autodetection. This usually works well, but sometimes games will show up on the list twice, incorrect games will show up with the correct game (especially true with the early V1 and V2 SCUMM games), and quite rarely the game will not show up on the list at all.
