Does PS3 play PS1 and PS2 games ?

Can a Playstation 3 play PS1 and PS2 games? Do I need to buy something to make it play older PS DVDs? i'm not sure if i can insert a PS2 OR a PS CD in PS3? There is no information written about it in my PS3 manual. Thank you

Yes Sony's Blue Ray laser can read PS2 DVD and PS1 CD. So i think there is no technical reason that it can't play the backward models games. I don't know about any official confirmation on this. I believe Sony intends to make the PS3 backwards compatible games.

All PS3 80 GB and 160 GB models doesn't supports PS2 or PS1 games. That means not all PS3 consoles can play PS2 games. The PS3 40 GB will not play PS2 games but will play some PSone games. Playstation 3 80 GB model can play Playstation 2 and the original Playstation games.

For PS2 :

The following models play PS2 games:

• 20GB discontinued
• 60GB discontinued
• 80GB-discontinued

The following models do not:

• 40GB-discontinued
• 80GB-in production
• 160GB-in production
