    Hey!
Well the first thing i would suggest you do update windows 7 as you may recieve update for DirectX if any update is available. OpenGL error occurs if DirectX is at problem. Download if you find any patch for the game and openGL itself...! This might help! All the best!

    Hey!
DirectX might be at problem. Some games don't recognize DirectX11 and assumes that there is no DirectX installed. Well i would then suggest you to install DirectX 9. This will works in parallel with DirectX 11 and without sffecting system's stability. See this link for more details : Can i install DX9 in Windows Vista 32-bit

This is an easy fix. Simply change compatibility mode for the quake3.exe to run in vista mode. I had the same issue and that fixed it. If vista mode gives you trouble try other operating system modes.

No need to change your compatibility mode.
    The problem solution:

    1. Open the Quake 3 folder, enter baseq3 and edit q3config.cfg
    2. Change seta r_mode value to 6 (or to 4)

    Thanks, that worked !

    Specifically :

If you can't install Quake 3 Arena on Windows 7 =

Copy the CD contents to your hard drive in a temp folder

Go to the directory "baseq3" and open "q3confic.cfg" with notepad

Inside the file it is just one line :

// generated by quake, do not modify

Under that add this line :

    seta r_mode 6

...and save it. If there is an error make sure the file is not "read only".

It worked for me. As stated above try "4" if "6" doesn't work (?)

    Hooray, Quake 3 nostalgia

And I found this elsewhere and it worked for my widescreen LCD

To make Quake 3 widescreen :

Edit q3config.cfg (preferably with textpad) and edit these lines:

    seta r_mode "x"
    Set this to -1.

    seta r_customwidth "xxxx"
    seta r_customheight "xxx"
Set this to your favorite widescreen resolution.

    seta cg_fov "90"
Set this according to your preference. I recommend 100 for 16:10 resolutions and 105 for 16:9 resolutions.

More then a year later, this fix just worked for me as well!! I have a Dell mini laptop with Inter 945 video drivers. Got the same error in quake 3. I read all kinds of suggestions including installing directx9 to run parrelel with directx11.

But then I found this, opened the file and changed the 6 to a 4, now it works perfect!!

    Thanx
    Merry Christmas!!
