There is software that can copy a Wii or Gamecube DVD to your PC, but you would need to hack the Wii os in some way to play the backup games.

Actually, backing up a movie or game that you already own falls within the realms of "fair use" which means it is perfectly legal.

The problem is that the method to create a back-up copy can be used to create copies for illegal distribution, which means game developers make it as hard as possible to make copies at all. Not to mention, if someone posts instructions on a public forum for how to make said copies, unscrupulous people would use the knowledge to violate copyright and digital rights, and that in turn can get the owners of the public forum in legal trouble.

    Instructions

    1. Find a DVD-ROM drive that is specifically designed to backup Wii games. One high quality and inexpensive drive capable of backing up Wii games is the LG GDR-8164B, which can be found at ConsoleSource.com for a reasonable price. Other compatible drives are the LG-8163b, the LG-8162b and the LG-8161b. It is crucial that you purchase the correct drive. otherwise the backup process will not work properly.
    2. Install the drive onto your computer following manufacturer's instructions. Once this is complete you need to download the following software applications: Raw dump 2.0, net Framework 2.0 and WinRar.
    3. Complete the installation process for the applications. Right click on the Rawdump.rar icon and select "Extract to rawdump2.0\" in order to make a desktop folder called "Rawdump."
    4. Insert your Wii game into the LG drive you installed. Once the game is in the drive, double click the "Rawdump" folder on your desktop. After the folder has opened, double click the Rawdump.exe icon to initiate the process.
    5. Watch for Rawdump to open an interface window in which one option is "Start Dump." Select the "Start Dump" option and sit back and relax, as the process can take up to a few hours.
    6. Check the size of the file created once the dump is complete. Do this by opening the directory that contains the Rawdump.exe file. You will find your dump file labeled with the name of the game and a .ISO extension. Right click the ISO file, choose properties and check the file size. The file size should be exactly 4.37 GB (4,699,979,776 bytes). If there is any deviation from this norm the dump process did not complete properly and needs to be redone.
    7. Open a DVD/CD burning software such as Nero. If, like Nero, the software automatically opens a "Create disc" dialog, cancel out of it so that you can begin the process manually. Choose a "Burn disc" option in the burn software and select the ISO image that you dumped into your Rawdump directory. Begin burning at a relatively slow speed for your first try.

    The SD Card Method
    • Platform: Wii & GameCube
    • Requirements: A way to boot unsigned code, (modchip, PSO exploit, AR+memcard trick) SD card, Gecko adapter (or a homemade solution).
    • Explanation: Using the Gecko adapter you can use a SD card in conjuction with the adapter, it's fitted into the memory card port.
    • When loaded, it asks you to insert a DVD, when done it will start ripping to your SD card.
    • If your SD card is too small it dumps as much data as it can.
    • You can transfer it to your PC, insert the SD card back again and repeat that untill you have all the files, you can combine them with a simple DOS command.
    • Software: DVDtoSD

    The Network Method
    • Platform: GameCube only
    • Requirements: Phantasy Star Online, Nintendo Broadband Adapter and a CrossOver cable
    • Explanation: Basically you take advantage of an exploit found in the Phantasy Star Online game
    • , instead of getting data from the PSO server you send data from your PC (homebrew software) and that way you can run anything you want to.
    • Using the BBA, the GC reads the game when you insert it, and instead of running it, it sends the data back to the PC which stores it to a file on the harddrive.
    • Software: GCOM, NGCDev Ripper

    The LG Drive Method

    • Platform: Wii & Gamecube
    • Requirements: a LG-8164b or LG-8163b or LG-8162b or LG-8161b dvd drive. Get it from newegg, it's only 18 bux.
    • Explanation: This is my favourite method to backup games. Basically you don't need a way to load homebrew on neither the GC or Wii, you just need the drive.
    • The disadvantage however is that you can't play your backups because you have no way to boot unsigned code or a modchip.
    • I have a LG-8164b drive myself in combination with a chipped Wii and it works fine.
    • Software: Rawdump 2.0 (Don't use earlier versions, version 0.1 took 50hrs to rip!! while the latest takes 2.5hrs)

If the games you have ripped have a .wii or .wod extension they need to be unscrambled first.
Rawdump 2.0 has a builtin feature to do that.
When you want to burn your backup, just burn them like you normally would burn an ISO in Nero.
