Companys Says Sony To Support 3D Gaming In 2009

According to Neil Schneider, President and CEO of Meant to be Seen (MTBS), Blitz Games Studios has confirmed that Sony “fully intends” to support stereoscopic 3D gaming and Blu-ray 3D on PS3 in 2009 with their Blitz Tech engine. MTBS is a stereoscopic 3D certification and advocacy group.

Andrew Oliver, CTO of Blitz Games Studios says, “3D gaming on console is coming and we license the tech.”

“The best part is console support will only need a bios upgrade to work,” Schneider writes. “We are told that the ability to add this capability via bios may be unique to Sony PS3 versus the other console solutions.”

Stereoscopic 3D is the ability to display visible depth through two dimensional media. According to MTBS, stereoscopic 3D has proven to be successful in cinema with movies like Beowulf, U23D, and Hannah Montana, earning 2:1 and 3:1 revenue compared to traditional 2D theaters.

Attempts at making games “pop out” and look truly 3D is nothing new to gamers, but this technology has failed to reach mass popularity for gamers at home, mostly because the application has not proven to work well enough to care, it costs too much, or it makes us look dorky when using it. Will these concerns be addressed in the near future? Only time will tell. That reminds us, where did we put those glasses?

According to Neil Schneider, President and CEO of Meant to be Seen, the PS3 will require but a BIOS update to achieve 3D capability, making it stand out from its main rivals, the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii when it comes to out-of-this-world gaming. While this innovation is nice to have and all, one must realize that the value of gaming lies in the software, so you can have the latest and most powerful hardware, but without great software support, all of that amounts to nothing.

While Sony executives did boast about 4D gaming with their PS3, the capable gaming console hasn't even ventured near 3D as yet. Well, all of that is about to change as the PS3 is touted to gain 3D display capabilities sometime next year.

"A simple firmware upgrade the console would be able to enable stereoscopic viewing of films and video games."

Stereoscopic vision on PlayStation 3. Reproduction of the film in three dimensions to become a truly mass phenomenon in the coming months, with the James Cameron film, Avatar, which will make way. According to indiscretions, including Sony in this wave, it seems, in fact, that it is possible to enable the vision of stereoscopic films and video games through a simple firmware upgrade of the console.

A reveal is the developer Blitz Games Studios, creator of casual games like Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol Encore 2 and Bratz: Girls Really Rock. The release of this firmware is, therefore, planned during 2009. Blitz Games is developing a technology specifically designed to exploit this new feature and has called Blitz Tech Engine.

"The best thing is that it serves only a bios update to enable this feature. We believe that PlayStation 3 is the only hardware that can support through simple firmware upgrade," one reads about Meant to be Seen, showing what was said by Andrew Oliver, Chief Technology Officer of Blitz Games Studios.
