Halo 3 Recon Announced for Fall 2009

Developed exclusively for Xbox 360 by acclaimed developer Bungie, Halo 3: Recon is a stand-alone expansion that extends the award-winning Halo 3 experience with hours of new campaign and multiplayer gameplay. The release adds a new dimension to an all-encompassing universe that gamers around the world have known and loved for more than six years.

The new campaign chapter predates the events that unfold in “Halo 3” and gives players a new perspective through the eyes of a new hero in the “Halo” universe. New multiplayer maps ensure that the award-winning Xbox LIVE experience of “Halo 3” continues to thrive.

    • All-new campaign content. The “Halo 3: Recon” campaign is an intriguing side story that takes place during the terrifying events leading up to the Master Chief’s return to New Mombasa in “Halo 3.” Experience the fate of Earth from the brand-new perspective of a special forces ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper), adding a unique outlook and new gameplay elements to the events that unfold in the trilogy’s finale. While the feel of this new chapter will greatly resemble that of previous “Halo” experiences, “Halo 3: Recon” will require players to employ more elements of stealth and cunning than ever before.

    • A new hero: Prepare to drop. Known for their courage, valor and, at times, insanity, ODSTs are among the fiercest UNSC soldiers, priding themselves on being the first unit deployed into hostile situations. While not as large or supernaturally gifted as their Spartan comrades, these “Hell Jumpers” more than compensate with their ferocious attitudes and unwavering nerve.
    • Expanded multiplayer collection. No “Halo” experience would be complete without groundbreaking multiplayer content,* and “Halo 3: Recon” gives fans more of what they love. With exclusive new maps and full Forge options, players will find more multiplayer content than ever before with “Halo 3: Recon.”
    • Ever-growing community options. Players will continue to enjoy all the great “Halo 3” technological innovations, including Saved Films, screenshots, Campaign Scoring and four-player co-op. All of the new multiplayer maps fully support the Forge editor, offering endless gameplay customization possibilities for fans.

As Garnett said, think of it as Halo 3.5. Not playing as the Master Chief isn't as jarring as it seems at first, or have you already forgotten about a little game called Halo 2? Look for Halo 3 Recon in fall 2009 and a trailer on GameVideos very soon.

Just to clear this up: Halo 3 Recon is Bungie’s last Halo project

Just in case you didn’t figure it out by now, famed Halo developer* Bungie has reiterated that Halo 3: Recon will be the company’s last Halo game. Don’t worry, though: there’s a map pack scheduled for early next year and another one due for around the time of Halo Wars‘ release.

    Halo 3: Recon isn't a "full game" - Bungie

Speaking to Kotaku, Bungie men Luke Smith and Brian Jarrard said that how this will affect the price of Recon is still undecided.

"We're not viewing this as a full game," the Bungie pair said at TGS. "I would think of it as our Frozen Throne," added Smith, referring to Blizzard's rather amp expansion for Warcraft III. We'd rather have an excellent 5 hours than a drawn out ten anyway, to be honest (as long as it's not £45).

During Bungie's TGS rounds more info has emerged on Recon, which as it turns out is still a first-person shooter and not the gritty "Ghost Recon-style" game rumoured earlier this year.

Recon is a standalone release and will come with new Achievements totalling 1000 Gamerscore, says Bungie.

As we already know, you play as an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper, which means you'll have to pick your battles a bit more carefully than the Master Chief would.

Most of the battles in the covenant-infested New Mombasa will take place during dark nighttime scenes, the developer revealed.

Disappointingly, on the multiplayer front it's same old, same old apart from a few new maps. That means saved films, Forge and four-player co-op - not the eight player ODST squad battles rumoured earlier this year.

But we're certainly not going to moan about a well-due excuse to return to Halo 3. Let's see some gameplay footage, please Bungie.

Halo 3 Recon - new art

A new piece of Halo 3 Recon artwork has emerged in the form of US mag Game Informer's forthcoming cover, which hits the shops next week.

The mag promises "10 pages packed full of info and screenshots straight from Bungie," and hopefully - unlike Halo 3 - it won't just be a load of multiplayer stuff to tease us even more than we already have.

Bungie has previously referred to the standalone expansion as its "Frozen Throne" (in reference to Blizzard's content-packed Warcraft III expansion) and said it's "not viewing this as a full game."

A single-player campaign following the antics of a hard-nut Orbital Drop Shock Trooper as well as new maps and multiplayer content are promised.

Look out for the details hitting the internet soon then.
