I had the same problem but I do not know how it was solved. What you can do is manually delete the folder that bears the name of your account (C-Prog-Files Steam-steamapps-your account) and try to launch, it again.

I remember a lot of people had this problem when hl2 first came out. Is your hl2 up-to-date, they released a patch to fix this problem a long time ago.

If you have the latest version, you can try copying and pasting this into your web browser "steam://validate/220" without quotes. This will check that you hl2 files aren't corrupted.

for future details please send me your rig details

If that doesn't help, then your ram might be defective. You have 1GB right? If you have 2 sticks of 512, remove one and try to play hl2. If that still doesn't work try the other stick.
