After spending half the night downloading this recommended beefed up version of Shell32.dll, I spent most of today getting my computer back to where it was before I applied your advice. After getting the error message:
exporoer.exe: Original 874 could not be located in the dynamic link library
SHELL32.dll
Nothing would work after that, until I got into command prompt mode and renamed this new file and got my old file back to it's old state.

Now I'm back to where I was before and feeling like I'm much more comfortable with only having a few things not working on my computer than having the whole computer unusable.

Any other advice that might really work?!
