USB Iomega external CD-RW drive does not show in the "my computer" folder

USB Iomega external CD-RW drive does not show in the "my computer"
folder. I am running windows 98SE on a Winbook XL2 laptop. I installed
the driver (optical_iomega_driver_update-w32-x86-1041.exe) at

I think I am to use that I got from the Iomega site. As far as I read
on the Iomega site this appears to be the only driver I need to run
the drive. The word update in the driver title makes me think that I
might need another driver on my hard drive first in order to update
it. Does anybody have any experience with this problem? I am also
seeing that windows 989SE was or was not USB 2.0 compliant. Does that
mean that there is no backward compatibility? And that the CD-RW would
not just work slower as an USB 1.1 device?

That appears to be the driver....it states:
Windows 98SE & Windows 98
All CD-RW and DVD Drives
(except QuickTouch DVD and 7-in-1 Card Reader CD-RW drives)

It also states it contains the latest Windows 98/98SE drivers required, and also
contains Microsoft's own patches to fix many USB problems, so nothing else should be
needed.

Did you run the downloaded exe file? What happened? Did you follow all
instructions on-screen exactly? Did you reboot when done?
Were you required to install the driver first and then plug in the drive after a
reboot, or was there a different procedure?

USB 2.0 drivers would have to be supplied by the maker of the motherboard, assuming
you actually have USB 2.0 ports on it. You must physically have USB 2.0 ports
either on the motherboard or added via a PCI card. If added, the drivers would come
from the add-on card maker.

You can't make USB 1.1 port into a USB 2.0 port via software or drivers.

I installed the driver as to Iomega's directions. At boot up the
screen flashes the text so fast I can't read it but it says something
to the effect that the driver could not load. Are USB 2.0 devices not
always backward compatible with 1.1 or 1.0 USB? I thought the
manufacturers made most that way but the data transfer rate would just
be slower. I can't find information if the drive can use either 2.0 or
1.1. Where in device manager should the driver show under USB and what
might it be called?

The USB 2.0 devices I have used are all backward compatible. I suppose it's
possible that there are some out there that are not....but I haven't found them.

In Win98SE, I don't think the driver for the device will appear anywhere in Device
Manager until the drive is plugged in and recognised by the system.

.... I have come across some which have a different _driver_ for 2.0 and 1.1.
I _think_ I've found that the 2.0 driver if loaded _is_
backwards-compatible, but this may not be so (or not in alll cases).
