| Fixing Windows 98 TimeZones for the New 2007 Daylight Saving Time Rules http://www.solprovider.com/articles/win98timezones Fixing Windows 98 TimeZones for the New 2007 Daylight Saving Time Rules Originally written on 02/02/2007 I still think Windows 98 is the best operating system from Microsoft so this article explains how to fix the rules for Windows 98's time zones with the new 2007 Daylight Saving Rules. The fix is very easy, These rules are from Microsoft. I just changed the format so they work with Windows 98. Since Congress reserved the right to change the rules for time zones back to the rules as they were since 1986 if no energy savings are noticed or the public complains, I also provide a method to return to the old rules. To change to the new 2007 Daylight Saving Rules for Time Zones for Windows 98: Download New Time Zones: http://www.solprovider.com/solprovider/articles.nsf/file/timezones/$FILE/W98NewTimeZones.reg If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, you can choose "Open". If you are using a better browser, you should choose "Save" or "Save it to disk", wait for the download to complete, and double-click the file to run it. Continue either method by clicking OK twice (on each of two messages about the registry.) Then double-click the time (usually in lower right corner of your screen.) The clock will appear. Change the time zone if necessary. To change to the old 2006 Daylight Saving Rules for Time Zones for Windows 98: Download Old Time Zones: http://www.solprovider.com/solprovider/articles.nsf/file/timezones/$FILE/W98OldTimeZones.reg Follow the same instructions as for the new fix. You can apply this fix at any time. Your computer will update the clock correctly when DST starts or ends. I recommend using it before March 11, 2007 because that is the next change in the United States. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MDGx sent some corrections. His webpage about time zones is here. http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#TZU He has an EXE program to make the update even easier. (I prefer to provide REG files since they are text and can be easily checked for maliciousness. I trust MDGx to provide safe programs, but that does not imply you should.) Unofficial DST Update for Windows 95/OSR1/OSR2/98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME [68 KB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/Q931836.EXE This could be a great conspiracy theory. Microsoft stops supporting Windows 98, and the President of the United States announces the first change to the rules for Daylight Savings Time in 20 years. This is the first time a change in the rules has affected personal computers in the United States since the last change was before personal computers were popular. Because Windows 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft, many people think they need to upgrade for their computer's clock to work correctly. The above fix required about ten minutes of work to create and test, and it is only available here. |

Cheers 98 Guy,,,, good research. Ian H (btw, gov's do what they want, when they want, and use tax-payers money to do it....... they even justify police to act on their behalf. an average 'joe' in any country is screwed no matter what. its times like this that one has to 'think and see' outside the nutty box we allowed ourselves to be put in.) Ian H wrote: > Cheers 98 Guy,,,, good research. I had to take action on this DST thing because our win-98 machines were acting a little screwy lately with scheduled items in outlook. Someone using a machine with XP (with the DST update) was setting future schedule items in outlook and when the win-98 machines looked at those items they were off by an hour. I ran tzedit (it was already on our win-98 systems) and it was dead simple to change the DST rules. In the end, I think we ultimately solved that problem by also correcting the DST settings on our win-2K exchange server. The server didn't have tzedit, but for the hell of it we ran the win-98 tzedit on the 2k server - and it worked! |
