McAfee Won't Update Beyond 4.0.4939

On about 1/18/2007, I updated McAfee's definitions to... 4.0.4939.

Can that be the last I'll ever get? Ever since then, I just get the
message that I'm fully up-to-date!

Win9x/ME was fully dropped from support.

I suggest Avira AntiVir as a replacement.

Could be with the version you have, then again, wait awhile and see.

Are you sure? On what date? It STILL offers me that Scan Engine 4.4.00,
which I won't try again.

This version 5.21.1000 kept working all this while, & I was getting the
latest definitions even higher versions got. I had to be careful which
Scan Engine to use, though.

happened with my last full system restore from a backup. I had to take
about 80 defs then! But nothing more has come in since!

I think by that document my VirusScan v.5.21.1000 Engine 4.3.20 has been
unsupported since '04. But it still continued to work good enough till
now! It could be something I did at fault, although it did take in about
80 defs at once after that.

Do you know whether definitions have gone beyond... 4.0.4939..?

I've been clicking those! But it seems they want me to upgrade & start
paying for it. Where is that page of free superdats? But, even then, I
may have to take in an updated & poisonous scan engine, if I'm not
careful. The only one that works for me with minimal sluggishness is
Scan Engine v.4.3.20.

That's it, I guess, from an old post of Lipman's. It seems there is a
Superdat for definitions numbered 4955 (where I have only 4939). I guess
I have to play with that.

....you once posted to me, I did after 3 tries get 4955xdat.exe to
download. That one won't update the scan engine, which would be trouble
for me. I will run it shortly & see what happens. Hopefully it will
reset something, & afterwards I'll be able to get them again the normal
way!

The SuperDAT will not recognize your version of software and won't work.

Time for a new AV application. If you want a free solutionm, I again suggest Avira AntiVir.
For an excellent paid-for version, I suggest Kaspersky or NOD32.

believe. Won't it create these...?...

Try reading this message thread. It will explain how to get new dats
and how to extract and cut and paste into the engine folder.
