| Win 98SE vs Toshiba External Hard Drive 250GB
Hi, Just bougth a Toshiba External USB 2.0 250GB hard disk. The saleguy tells me it will work on any pc. I have tried it on my W 98SE pc but it won't work because it needs drivers. Just like other stuff i put on my 98SE. Now Toshiba tells me these hard drives will only work on XP and there are no drivers available for other platforms. Has anybody managed to get this device working under 98SE? Otherwise the only way for me is to get my money back at the shop. Greatings |

BTW, you will need to have a controller card when you get above the 137 gigabyte limit of 98SE. I think having multiple partitions can also overcome this problem but I know a controller card can overcome this problem. I have an 80 gigabyte Western Digital with XP Professional and Windows Vista Ultimate --- 32 bit edition on that hard drive in separate partitions that were created courtesy of Boot It NG. This drive is a slave drive to my main master drive which is a smaller 40 gigabyte hard drive in Fat 32 which is set up in one giant partition for Window 98 Second Edition. I have only used up about 10 gigabytes of space for the 98SE side of my computer and still have plenty of room left on the other hard drive as well. BTW, I have emailed support at Western Digital to register my two hard drives and also for your consideration since these two hard drives have worked out so well for me then I will find out what you can get and what I can get as a replacement hard drive when needed for 98SE. Have a nice day, mega and the response should be within 1-2 business days! |

Thanks Dan! Yes, it looks kind of dumb of me to try to get it running but the guy in the shop told me it would. After i sent tech support of the shop an email they told me they do supply a driver for it. I asked them to tell me where i could get it, but have yet to get an answer. This while Toshiba told me they don't have drivers. I hope it wil work because it is a big harddisk for little money. Besides, other vendors will probably also stop making 98SE drivers so the only option would then be to upgrade the laptop. Laptop is still fast enough with 98SE, but probably not on xp or even vista later on. Agian, thanks! Greatings |

Support for 98SE is still there especially in regards to some of the hardware coming out. For example, I was told Logitech has a new laser mouse that works with 98SE. I have not yet confirmed this but see no reason why someone would lie about this. The last Ati Radeon card that is the latest and greatest for 98SE and supported through a ME driver is Ati Radeon 9800 XT with 256 megs. of video memory and supports 4x/8x AGP (Advanced Graphics Port). I upgraded from Ati 9000 to Ati 9200 and now to the 9800 XT for my tri-boot system. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy 1 --- a slightly older model of the one currently offered on the website that has drivers that work in 98SE. The nice thing about this Creative solution and Ati solution is that both are fully supported from 98SE to Windows Vista except for the Sound Blaster Audigy 1-2 (not sure about 3-4 yet) which has driver issues that I and Rock, MVP have discovered. Another user posted about the solution being to use the current XP driver but I have not tried this solution yet. A large power supply and a large enough case is critical when building a PC. I also have a DVD burner and a CD burner and two hard drives but enough about that and I will check my email for any information that may help you. It is time for me to have a late breakfast and bye for now! |

The fact is it recognizes a new device as i beleive "USB 2.0 + Hdd" or something, i will check this tonight. Then it wants a driver. Isn't there a driver from a previous Toshiba USB drive when 98 was still supported i can use? Greatings |

| Re: Win 98SE vs Toshiba External Hard Drive 250GB
Get your money back. Toshiba doesn't bother to provide *any* drivers for that drive, depending instead on the native drivers in Win 2000 and XP (and presumably, Vista.) Everywhere I look, the product specs specifically state "OS Required -- Windows 2000 or XP". Toshiba's own site lists no drivers. I've always had good luck with Maxtor external HDs. Just make sure that they're using USB2. On USB 1, the timing apparently causes problems that Windows interprets as file system issues, corruption, etc. Scandisk, et al, will proceed to mangle the data if you let them. At least, I've seen that happen, even in XP (but using USB1). Regardless of what model you choose next, if it doesn't say right on the box that Win98SE is supported, then write down the model number(s), then go home and thoroughly research them before making your purchase. Or do what I do -- research the models online before going out, or even make the purchase online. -- Gary S. Shoulda figured that would be the case, that Maxtor now has drives that are only for Win2K/XP (and Vista, I presume.) Thanks for the clarification. -- Gary S.
