It only goes to F. :-) And even Quadrovigesimal (base-24) doesn't use the letter 'O', so there is no confusion with zero.. (I'd never heard that word before either ;-) Googled on base 24.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Base_24 |

I just hope my mainboard is not crashing. Well, you "could" do the usual memory tests [memtest86, Microsoft's, or other], and some other diagnostics on the motherboard and devices. However, did you at least check for what I suggested? > > > One think I dont like about new computers. > No floppy drives > No dial up modem (Not everyone is on Dsl or wireless) > I pay $10,95 for dial-up (No, not netzero or juno) > > I would like a laptop, not wide screen 16.9 or 17 inch flat screen > and a resolution of 800 x 600 with a 56k modem, and a floppy drive, > cdrw drive and network card in case I can get an dsl or wireless > service some day. > > I read and heard windows 7 is supposed to be better and faster and run > like windows xp > > I am hoping to get windows xp home off of ebay and I hope a legal > version that has not been activated. > > > Greg > -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.org/ref/windows-main.htm Windows Info, Diagnostics, Security, Networking http://peoplescounsel.org The "real world" of Law, Justice, and Government ___--- |

I just hope my mainboard is not crashing. All right. I misread your answer to glee. Leave your friends computer out of it, until your own 9x machine is fixed. Go back & answer all of glee's questions. If you can't boot to Normal Mode, then hold F5 as you boot to see whether you can get to Safe Mode. Or hold CTRL as you boot to get to the Startup Menu, & select Safe Mode from that. Also, I think MEB offered sound advice. Especially... http://support.tallemu.com/vbforum/s...5&postcount=11 Joan Archer's way to ensure ZoneAlarm is completely gone. ....& his advice to un/re-install avast!. That can be accessed at "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall tab". Avast! Home Edition v.4.8.1351 hasn't hurt me, but I do have more RAM than you. Here are apps to test RAM... http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp RAM tester http://www.memtest86.com/ RAM tester http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp RAM tester > One think I dont like about new computers. > No floppy drives > No dial up modem (Not everyone is on Dsl or wireless) > I pay $10,95 for dial-up (No, not netzero or juno) I'm paying that much for NetZero. So far, I continue to resist Verizon's latest discount for FIOS. They want to give me three things for the price of two-- but only for two years! I don't know what I'd do, if I had to give up my floppy drive or my PCTEL Platinum V.90 Modem! > I would like a laptop, not wide screen 16.9 or 17 inch flat screen > and a resolution of 800 x 600 with a 56k modem, and a floppy drive, > cdrw drive and network card in case I can get an dsl or wireless > service some day. > > I read and heard windows 7 is supposed to be better and faster and run > like windows xp > > I am hoping to get windows xp home off of ebay and I hope a legal > version that has not been activated. DON'T tell us how you're going to get it! If there's the slightest hint of illegality, MEB will get after you! > > Greg -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, Should things get worse after this, PCR pcrrcp@netzero.net |
