Where to find USB generic device drivers for Windows 98?

Hi

I purchased a Toshiba USB 2.0 Flash Drive 4GB, TransMemory.
I called Toshiba technical support and they said they don't offer Windows 98
support for this flash drive. They told me to search for USB generic device
drivers for Windows 98 on the Internet.

Where can I find USB generic device drivers or official USB device drivers
for Windows 98 First Edition and Windows 98 Second Edition operating systems
in order to make this flash drive mentioned above to work in both versions of
Windows 98?

My friend told me that downloading generic or unofficial USB device drivers
from a unknown website may contain viruses to infect a Windows 98 computer
after running the executable file for installing the USB device drivers from
a Windows 98 computer desktop or from a CD drive of the Windows 98 computer.

Much help is appreciated.

Thanks

Egan

Re: Where to find USB generic device drivers for Windows 98?

I recommend using the driver from the Italian web site wintricks.it

It is not installed beforehand like some other generic drivers; rather you point to
itwhen Windows first detects the inserted thumb drive, as you can see from the
pictures on the web pages, even if you cannot read Italian.
http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98.html

Although the pages are in Italian, you can look at the screenshots on some of the
pages to determine how the driver is installed and uninstalled:

http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98_2.html

http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98_4.html
http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98_5.html
The Download link is the "Download" button on the last page.
http://www.wintricks.it/download/wtgenusb.zip

Basically, you download the driver package (.zip file), and unzip it to a folder
where you plan to store it on the computer. Then when you insert your flash drive,
Windows will detect it and give you the option to find the driver. Choose to have
it look in the folder where you unzipped the downloaded files, and it will see the
..inf file there and install your flash drive.

You can use this same .inf file to install other flash drives and USB mass storage,
so save the .zip file somewhere safe and store the .inf file in a permanent location
of your choice. I use the hidden Windows\Inf\Other folder, but you can use whatever
you like.
