| cdrom not found
I am trying to reinstall win98se after reformating hdd. using hdd mfgs install floppy, then following with win startup floppy, then insert #1 restore disc for win98. The green light comes on, disc spins up, then the light goes out, and the disc continues to spin but nothing happens. Have run diagnostic test floppy for hdd, and all tests say passed, hdd ready to run. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- compaq 7360, maxtor max blast plus II 40 gig hdd, a open based cd-952b cdrom, win98se |

Are you loading the correct driver for the CD drive in the config.sys and autoexec.bat on the bootable floppy? Does the floppy contain the driver? IIRC I had to set a jumper and partition my 20 gig HD with 10 2 gig partitions on W98 (not SE) - but that may have been more a BIOS issue than a Windows issue. I suspect you need the jumper. It's not quite clear what your procedure is. If you are booting to a DOS prompt from the win startup floppy and then inserting the install CD, you need to type x:\Setup at the DOS prompt, where x is the drive letter of the CD drive (for instance, D). If this command doesn't work, your CD might be non-standard. Yo may be able to get an idea of what the CD is by doing x: dir where x is the drive letter of the CD drive, (for instance, D). If you are getting to the startup menu from the win startup disk then you must select the option to start the PC with CD-Rom support. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221829 How to Install Windows 98 on a Computer with No Operating System If you are not booting to the win startup floppy then maybe you are expecting the install CD to autorun - W98 install CDs are not usually bootable. If yours is an OEM CD it may be bootable, but there may be special procedures for starting the installation. Have you tried booting the machine without the floppy inserted but with the install CD inserted? If you suspect the CD drive is faulty then try it with a different CD - if you have booted to DOS with CD-Rom support then any data CD should be accessible with a command such as x: dir where x is the drive letter of the CD drive, (for instance, D). -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "glinjxn" <glinjxn@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:09710306-BF94-453B-939D-D5441CCF40F0@microsoft.com... >I am trying to reinstall win98se after reformating hdd. using hdd mfgs > install floppy, then following with win startup floppy, then insert #1 > restore disc for win98. Forget my earlier response, I believe I misunderstood your situation. |

This CD is bootable for system restore purposes, no startup floppy for this purpose. Further, its states that all the restore information resides in the compaq partition as well More details here: http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-95...partition.html -- Dave If it looks like fish, smells like fish, its not a cantaloupe.. |

glinjxn, A suggestion after you get this situation straightened out. To prevent "losing" your CD player in Windows if you partition your Hard Drive, go into your Device Manager now and change the CD's Drive Letter to Z in both mini-windows. Bug_zs |
