How to search and user Faster DNS Server on Windows 7

DNS Server which stands for Domain Name Server (or System or Service) are very helpful to provide you better speed during internet browsing. Some times we can speed up our Internet speed by changing the DNS servers by those DNS servers coming from Google Public DNS or OpenDNS. These use to be bit faster compared to others. DNS servers are used by your Internet connection to make the correspondence between a domain name and the IP address corresponding. It is simpler to navigate the Internet using domain names rather than numerical sequence. Whenever you call a page, while images are loaded or download files, a DNS server is used.

Usually you Internet service provider use to have their own DNS servers that communicate with all other DNS servers around the world to keep a list of matching domain names / IP addresses. But they are not the fastest DNS servers. Some services like Google Public DNS or OpenDNS include free provision of very swift DNS servers. So you can speed up your Internet browsing using these DNS servers rather than your ISP. Now there is a small utility called Namebench using which you can test the speed of DNS servers ISP is providing along with many public and free DNS servers from home, even if they belong to another service provider internet. You can then select and use the most powerful DNS server simply by changing the settings of your network connection on your computer. Here is how you can use this software.

    Installing and Testing Namebench

With Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Linux Ubuntu you can easily declare the new DNS servers to use for your Internet connection. Here is how to do the same:

    • In Namebench, note the addresses indicated in the Recommanded configuration area.
    • To configure the same on Windows 7, go through these steps:
      1. Click the Start button and click Control Panel.
      2. Click Network and Internet.
      3. Click Network and Sharing Center.
      4. In the left pane, click Change adapter settings.
      5. Double click the icon for your network connection (this can be a wired or wireless).
      6. Click the Properties button.
      7. Then double click the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
      8. Select Use the following DNS server address.
      9. Then type in the Preferred DNS server field the first DNS server address to use for Google 8.8.8.8 Public or DNS to OpenDNS 208.67.222.222.
      10. Then enter in the Alternate DNS server field the second DNS server address to use for Google 8.8.4.4 Public or DNS to OpenDNS 208.67.220.220.
      11. Check the box Validate Settings on Exit and click OK. Click Close.
      12. The new settings are applied and your network connection is verified. Click Close.
      13. Launch your Web browser and visit your favorite sites. They should be displayed smoothly and faster.
    • Once done, use the Primary Server IP address for the Primary DNS field and Secondary Server IP address for the secondary DNS field.
