How to Install Java on Linux, Mac OS X, iOS & Android

Java is another famous programming language used on various platform. Many applications that are available on web need Java to run. So in that case we cannot trace which app needs Java or not. Keeping this in your existing system or device is recommended. Java has a very wide platform. It has gain a nice popularity on mobile platform. As you can see a number of mobile apps and games are based on Java. In this article you will find a number of ways to install Java on mobile and desktop. Anyhow if we talk about Windows platform then it is much easier to run Java. Many times Windows Update automatically install Java support in your system. But what about others. In Linux also if you are using Ubuntu, there are automated services by which Java is configured. But in many cases we need to manually setup Java updates. By the methods which are mentioned below you can install Java on various platforms. Java is also required for many website to function well as there are number of applets used. For example I had seen in Safari, if you customize it as per your preference many drop down menus does not work. That is the most common error I face. Another thing, many websites have plugins to run some rich content. Those also does not works if there is no Java support in your phone.

As Java is widely used it is recommended to instal it in whatever device you have. Begining with Linux it is easier. But now iOS and Android has emerged as new platform for mobile devices. They are not too behind in supports Java platfrom. With right updates you can run and play your favorite Java games. Today or Tommorrow you might require to install this based on any website or app you are going to use. Websites does not upgrade or many of them do not have anykind of mobile version.

    Linux :

Linux means all those version which are old or used on server basis. Like Red Hat, SUSE, etc. Here I am not talking about Ubuntu or other verison which are more desktop friendly. In that you just need to type Java in Software manager and one you get your update. But in older version the setup is bit different. Or you can a manual process. There are two ways of isntalling. First either by installing it manually and second by using a Linux self extracting package. First download the Java package and use the second process Linux self extracting package. You just need to run this. For Red Hat you will require to find RPM packages.

Installing Java on Linux via self-extracting package :
    • Download the package. Change permission of the executable file. Use code - chmod a+x jre-7u<type the version of Java Update here>-linux-i586.bin.
    • To check permission type - ls -l. If it does not right permission it will not execute.
    • Type cd <provide the path name here>. Ex. cd /usr/java/
    • Then run the installation pacage. Ex. ./jre-7u<type the version of Java Update here>-linux-i586.bin. Review the Licene Agreement Box and enter Yes to move ahead.

Installing Java on Linux via Linux RPM (Redhat Package Manager) :
    • Login to Super User so that you have full access to the system. Type <provide the path name here>. Ex. cd /usr/java/.
    • Download the package. Change permission of the executable file. Use code - chmod a+x jre-7u<type the version of Java Update here>-linux-i586.bin.
    • To check permission type - ls -l. If it does not right permission it will not execute. Review the Licene Agreement Box and enter Yes to move ahead.

To use Java you will need to first configure it on the web browser you are using. For example Firefox. You have to ensure that there should be any older version of Java running in your system. On this platfrom you can only use a single version at a time.
    • Go on browser plugin directoy and click on libnpjp2.so
    • Then go in the sub-directly where Firefox is installed. Ex. cd<location where firefox is installed>/plugins
    • Then run ln -s <Installation Location where Java is installed>/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so.

    Download Java for Linux

    Mac OS X

This is simple here. You just need to update your operating system and you will all required updates in that pack only. For example after a time interval you will receive updates for Mac operating system. You can run that. Or else go on Applications > Utilities > Java > Java Preferences. Here you can see the version of Java installed in your system. Other than this you can use a dmg package to install Java on Mac system.

    iOS

Many of us are aware about the this. iOS is another Apples' bright operating system for mobile platform. If we talk about using Java on iOS there are many few chances for that. For example JavaFX. This is the app that can help you to use Java on Apple iOS devices. There are certain virtual machine which offer you to use Java on iOS but they do not work to great extent.

    Android

Android is a new platform booming very fast. This operating system has number of app support that you can play without Java support. There are emulator for Android platform to run Java games and app. There is a emulator called as JBED. This is a emulator that can be used to run Java support apps and games on Android platform. The installation is fine. Till yet there is no proper solution to make this work properly on Android platform, but soon there will be new updates coming on Android after a time interval.

If you use you can find that a number of websites simply works well on Android. I had not faced any Java issue. But yet some apps might not directly work on that as they are not optimized to work on Java. Comparing to a desktop, mobile platform is not more broad. So there can be future updates on that. Talking about Cross platform there is no such support provided yet.
