How to Install Java on Mac

The Kara-versions come in the form of JAR files (Java Archive) therefore. To execute a JAR file, you must have Java installed on your computer.

    Java installation

    • Download from Sun's Web site, the current Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Proceed to the Java download page and click on " download " the right of Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
    • Accept the terms of use by clicking "Accept License Agreement".
    • Select the download link for your operating system (eg Windows or Linux) and save the installation file on your hard disk.
    • Start the installation of the JRE by double-clicking (or execute) the downloaded file and follow the instructions.

    Background information: Java JRE
To run the Kara-environments, you need Java J2SE (Java 2 Standard Edition) version 1.4 or later. This is available in two versions: The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is used to run Java programs, the JDK (Java Software Development Kit) includes the compiler to develop Java programs. The SDK includes the JRE.

To start Kara, MultiKara, TuringKara, LegoKara, JavaScriptKara, or PythonKara RubyKara, you need the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for JavaKara you need the SDK.

The company Sun Microsystems offers the JRE free for various platforms.

    Note to Mac OS
In Mac OS X's Java SDK is already installed. Earlier versions of Mac support Java version 1.3 or higher. Apple uses a modified Mac OS X Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which is already installed with the JDK and can be updated with the software update. However, Java uses standard 5th to start Kara. However for Java 6 you must set so that Java applications can be loaded with version 6: / Applications / Utilities / Java Preferences. This is done by being pulled under 'Java application versions "Java SE 6 to the first position.

Re: How to Install Java on Mac

We all know that Apple's closed policies, although we may find at home in some ways, always end up taking a downside. One is the issue of Java. In Mac OS X cannot install any version of Java if it has not previously gone through the "hands" of Apple. The problem with this is that they are the ones who decide which libraries include and which not. I recently came across the problem that Apple does not include the Java 3D libraries and which stopped giving official support for Leopard, so if you want to make some use Java 3D you have to find yourself a little tweak.

Actually it is not difficult to add them to the system; here are the basic steps to do so.
    • The first thing you have to do is to access the download area and look for the API Sun.
    • Once downloaded we need to copy the files. "Jar" in the Java library. This is in the path: ... / Library / Java / Home / lib / ext
    • To copy will have to input the user password.
    • Once copied only have to select from our preferred IDE.
