Email Security: 5 Tips to help protect

The summer period sees the courier mail engorged a little more in the absence of users. Spammers, they are not on vacation. Also, remember Websense 5 good practices to be adopted to prevent attacks and scams.

    1. Reduce Surface Area

The threat landscape is changing very quickly these days, new threats emerging every minute. It is therefore important to choose a messaging security solution capable of providing a classification in real time to detect threats as they emerge. On average, 26% of daily threats are prevented by ThreatSeeker (the detection network Websense) while Antivirus signatures have not yet been issued. During the month of May this year, 204,000 instances of 81 threats "zero-day" have been blocked by various ThreatSeeker before the virus were unable to detect them.

    2. Do not fall into the traps of social engineering

Cleverly disguised attacks using phishing messages very personalized. We have recently observed some diversification of these highly targeted attacks in malicious spam. Spammers have usurped identities known to induce potential victims to click on URLs in messages. In May 2010, approximately 85% of all e-mails were spam (source: Websense Security Labs) and in recent months we have denoted decoys involving Facebook, Twitter, iTunes, Amazon, Adobe, and even offers employment. Attachments and malicious links embedded in e-mails are a real threat. For May alone, we found that 93% of spam integrating a URL. Most messaging solutions offer no protection against this type of threat.

    3. Be wary of attachments, again and again

In 2010, e-mails - often using very popular topics - reappeared as a key vehicle for distributing files and trojans attached. We noted the same increase last year. Researchers have also reported threats combined increasingly sophisticated and difficult to block, as well as simple data stealing malicious attachments and URLs. The campaign urged victims to download a small malicious program. These e-mails contain an attachment in PDF format and content of the message a link to a malicious executable file. To add to their credibility, these messages were like e-mail transferred from a security officer of your company explaining that Adobe Reader should be updated.

    4. Unify security to stop threats combined

Protect yourself against blended threats through an email security solution which exploits the intelligence of Web security technology and data security to enjoy unprecedented visibility into existing and emerging threats. The scammers use a combination of three areas: e-mail, Web and data theft. It makes sense to have a unified security solution taking into account these three aspects. A unified and combined offers one of the highest levels of email protection against the risks to the security of e-mails incoming and outgoing calls.

    5. Maintaining security update

Due to the dynamic nature of threats, updates in real time are essential. One of the easiest ways to manage these updates is to opt for security as a service. The SaaS (Security-as-a-Service) solutions allow access to the latest and most successful and expertise with regard to threats. It guarantees security of Web services and messaging without incurring extraordinary cost and complexity of local materials.

SaaS allows you to move all the processes of monitoring, implementation and management of corporate security to data centers in the 'cloud'. Threats such as spam, viruses and other malicious code are then stopped before reaching the corporate network. This infrastructure enables the deployment of security services to mail in a few minutes in small and large branches based in the world. Businesses can enjoy all the benefits of security of the content as current as possible while eliminating the tasks related to distribution, deployment and continuous updating of equipment locally.
