How to add a Windows Server 2008 domain controller to an existing domain

In this thread, the introductory series dedicated to Windows Server 2008, we will examine the process of preparing and installing a new Windows Server 2008 domain controller in a domain Windows 2003 or Windows 2000 existing infrastructure and effectively migrating the schema. Keep in mind that with the introduction of a new domain controller Windows Server 2008 domain controller any Windows NT Server 4.0 will no longer be supported and should be first upgraded to Active Directory, or removed. First of all, you must prepare the Active Directory schema to "accommodate" the new features introduced by the new operating system, updates regarding the structure of the forest domain. In the first case we have to position ourselves on the domain controller that currently holds the Schema Master FSMO role, log on with an account that is part of Domain Admins, Schema Admins and Enterprise Admins in a folder and copy the contents of convenience the \ sources \ adprep the DVD to install Windows Server 2008. From the command prompt, position the newly created folder and run:
    adprep / forestprep
Note the warning that any and all existing Windows 2000 domain controller must be updated to Service Pack 4 before proceeding. After a few seconds, the process will end successfully.

It is now necessary to update the functionality level Active Directory domain. We must position ourselves on the domain controller that currently holds the FSMO role of Domain Infrastructure (this often coincides with the domain controller that holds the Schema Master role mentioned above), log on with an account that is part of the Domain Admins and copy a folder in the shell contents of the \ sources \ adprep on the DVD to install Windows Server 2008 (if the server is the same, the folder is already present). If the current domain is a Windows 2000 domain from a command prompt there adprep placed in the folder you just created, and type:
    adprep / domainprep / gpprep
If the current domain is a Windows 2003 domain from a command prompt there adprep placed in the folder you just created, and type:
    adprep / domainprep

The domain functional level we're going to upgrade must already be in Native mode, which should not be present in Windows NT Server 4.0 domain controllers. In the event that the domain was still in Mixed mode, you see this error message in the very early stages of renovation.

Re: How to add a Windows Server 2008 domain controller to an existing domain

At this point, our Windows Server 2008 machine will be promoted to domain controller, obviously as a "domain controller, add an existing domain". From Start / Run, execute this command dcpromo.exe to start the process of installing Active Directory, then clicking the Add a domain controller to an existing domain.

There will be proposed to the Active Directory domain to which we belong.

After a few seconds to verify the current state of Active Directory, you will see a warning in which it is written that when you can not install a Read-Only Domain Controller (RODC) because the schema has not been prepared in this regard. This will be a topic for another article. Click anywhere on Yes to proceed. Not being at the time, no other sites in Active Directory, we can place the new domain controller in the default site.

There is a proposed list of roles that can take this domain controller. It can not be an RODC while installing the DNS Server and the role of Global Catalog. A message tells us that the root DNS server is not a delegation to this DNS server and this must be created manually later. We proceed by clicking Yes.

Please leave the default locations for folders in the database, the log of the Active Directory and SYSVOL folder. Enter the password to access in Directory Services Restore Mode, namely the arrangements necessary to perform critical operations on the Active Directory database, including her recovery from backup. The entered password must meet complexity requirements.

A summary summarizes the configuration that we're going to apply, and then click Next. Within minutes the installation is complete and we can restart the server.
