Installing a function of Windows Server 2008 Server Core

Once the Server Core installation and configured the server, you can install one or supplementary server positions. The Server Core installation of Windows Server 2008 supports the subsequent server positions:
    • Domain Services Active Directory (AD DS)
    • Lightweight Directory Services Active Directory (AD LDS)
    • DHCP Server
    • DNS Server
    • File Services
    • Printing Services
    • Media Services streaming
    • Web Server (IIS)

Prerequisites for installing a server role on a server running Server Core installation

To complete this task, you need the following:
    • A computer with a Server Core installation of Windows Server 2008 installed and configured.
    • A user account and administrator password to the server running a Server Core installation.
    • If you install and configure a print server, another computer running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 where you can run the Print Management Console to configure the print server remotely.
    • If you install and configure a DHCP server, the information necessary to configure a DHCP scope.
    • If you install and configure a DHCP server, you must configure the server running Server Core installation to use a static IP address.
    • If you install and configure a DNS server, the information necessary to configure a DNS domain.
    • If you install and configure an Active Directory environment, the information necessary either for attachment to an existing domain or create a new domain.
    • If you promote the server with the Server Core installation to act as a domain controller in an Active Directory domain, a user name and password for domain management.

Known issues for installing a server role in Server Core installation

    • You cannot utilize the wizard to install the domain controller from Active Directory (Dcpromo.exe) on a server running a Server Core installation. To install or eliminate the domain controller role, you must exercise an unattended file with Dcpromo.exe. Dcpromo.exe can also scamper on another computer with Windows Server 2008 and exploit the wizard to save an unattended installation file, and then you can use the server running the Server Core installation.
    • Dcpromo.exe restart the computer immediately when the installation is complete or when Active Directory is uninvolved unless RebootOnCompletion = No is included in the answer file.
    • The Web Server role (IIS) does not support ASP.NET in Server Core installations. For the reason that an environment does not support managed code, the Server Core installation does not include the following features of IIS:
      • IIS-ASPNET
      • IIS-NetFxExtensibility
      • IIS-ManagementConsole
      • IIS-ManagementService
      • IIS-LegacySnapIn
      • IIS-FTPManagement
      • WAS-NetFxEnvironment
      • WAS-ConfigurationAPI

To add a printer to print server

    1. Determine the IP address or host name of the printer. This information can be obtained through a test or configuration page from the printer or you may need to consult the instructions in the manufacturer's manual.
    2. Verify that the print server can communicate with the printer over the network by pinging the printer from the print server.
    3. On another computer with Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, open the Print Management Console and add the server running the Server Core installation.
    4. Expand the entry for the print server running Server Core installation, right-click or right-click Drivers, and then click Add Driver. Wizard starts to add printer drivers.
    5. Complete the wizard to install the appropriate printer driver.
    6. In the Print Management Console, right-click Printers, right-click and then click Add Printer. Wizard starts the installation of network printers.
    7. Click Add a printer TCP / IP or Web services based on IP address or host name and then click Next.
    8. Specify the host name or IP address of the printer (the port name will be the same by default) and then click Next.
    9. Make the necessary changes in the printer name, contact information or sharing state, and then click Next.
