Content Type | Mime Type for Office 2010 file format and extension

What is MIME Type?

MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) types used to detect the format of the file which is helpful for the Operating System to use the program to execute the file. In the Previous version of the Microsoft Office are using very short text for the Mime type. In the new Office i.e Microsoft Office 2010 the long mime type are used i.e. "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document"

File Extension:

As the new Mime Type is introduced in the Microsoft Office 2010 the file extension format is also changed in the same. If we see the extension of the Previous version of Office i.e. MS Office 93 to 2003 then you will get the file extension like .doc, .ppt, .xls etc. In the latest Office 2010 you will find the change in the file extension. Now this extension is having structure like .docx, .pptx, .xlsx etc. The MS Office 2003 are using the binary file format which is having the three letter extension as we have seen above but in the new Microsoft Office 2010 the XML file format is introduced which is having four letter file extension i.e. docx, .pptx, .xlsx.
