Cloning CD/DVD with ImgBurn on Windows 7

You want to copy a CD or DVD to make a backup or to share it with your friends (in respect of copyright of course)? Well Windows XP, Vista and 7 do not have tools for that.

You can burn files from your hard disk to a CD or DVD, create audio CDs from music files from your computer with the Windows Media player and even burn ISO disc images with Windows 7, but no exact copy of disk to another disk.

To do this, you will then have to go through a third-party software such as ImgBurn which is totally free, and works with Windows XP, Vista and 7.

ImgBurn will let you create a perfect image of your disk on your computer you can then put a blank disc in order to have an exact copy.

ImgBurn will also allow you to directly burn a downloaded ISO disc image on the Internet on a CD or DVD.

    Download and install ImgBurn:

ImgBurn is a free program you can download from here.

    • Download by clicking the above link and select a folder to download ImgBurn in the Downloads folder for example and click Save.

    • Once the download is complete, click the Run button.

    • In the wizard that opens, click the Next button.

    • Check the box I Accept the terms of the License Agreement and click Next.

    • Leave the default settings and click Next.

    • At the Ask Toolbar installation screen, uncheck all the boxes do not install the Ask Toolbar to your browser and change the start page. Then click Install.

    • Click Yes to allow the software to check back periodically for updates are not available.

    • When copying files over, finally click the Finish button.

Copy the disk on the hard drive:

Initially, you will copy the image of your source disk to your hard drive. This ensures a better reliability of your copies from the copies directly from disc to disc.

    • Start ImgBurn double clicking its shortcut on the desktop.

    • In the window that opens, click Create an image from a disk.

    • Insert the disk in the drive to copy: it is automatically detected.

    • Click the Browse button next to the Destination box.

    • Choose a temporary folder to store the image of your disk that will be extracted and name the image file that will be created. Click Save.

    • Then click the Play button.

    • Your disk is then copied as a disk image on your hard drive.

    • Once the copy is complete, music is played and a dialog box is displayed. Click the OK button.

    • You can close ImgBurn or click Mode menu and mode selector to return to the main menu of the software.

    Burn the disk image:

Now that you have an image of your original disc, you can burn to a blank disc to create a perfect copy. Note that you can burn the same way an ISO disc image downloaded from the Internet.

    • Start ImgBurn double clicking its shortcut on the desktop.

    • Click Burn Image to disk.

    • Insert a blank disc into your drive and click the Browse button next to the Source box.

    • Select the MDS file to the disk image you want to copy and click the Open button.

    • In the Settings box, you can reduce the burn speed (for sensitive data like audio CDs) and indicate the number of copies to be made (you must insert the blank disks as and when.

    • Leave the box checked to check that the software verifies that the corresponding etching performed well in every respect to the disk image selected. Caution, this operation doubles the length of the engraving. Turn it off so if you hurry. Then click the Burn button.

    • The engraving begins. After a few minutes, you have an exact copy of your CD / DVD original. If you've enabled auditing, the disc is ejected at the end of the burn and then inserted again to be checked. On a laptop, you'll probably close the drawer of the print to start the audit. Once the burning and verification is complete, music is played and a dialog box is displayed. Click the OK button.

    • Note that you can then delete the ISO disc image created on your hard disk during this operation. You can also keep it as backup.
