Manipulating Disk Images

A disc image or ISO image is an exact copy of a CD or DVD that is in the form of a file. This file contains information and on the CD or DVD, its structure and all files it contains. Disk images have several advantages. On the one hand, you can easily burn a CD or DVD from a disk image and then have a copy of the original disc.

You can indeed download images on Internet disc CD or DVD. This is often the case with Linux distributions or software collections, such as Ultimate Boot CD .

Conversely, it is easy to make a disk image on your computer from a CD or DVD that you own. You'll be able to "mount" the image and access its contents, as if the disk was in your drive. Convenient to carry with you a lot of CDs or DVDs without the clutter with the discs.

Create a disk image:

You want to make the image of a CD or a DVD disk to store on your computer and not have to use and the CD or DVD? For this, you can use the burning suite Nero either CDBurnerXP which is free. Below is how to do the same with the said applications:

With Nero:
Nero lets you create a disk image format NRG. A clean format with Nero but is recognized by most other burning software.
  • Insert the disc to copy your drive CD or DVD.

  • Start Nero SmartStart.

  • Open the Save section.

  • To create the image of a CD, click Copy CD command. For a DVD, click Copy DVD.

  • Insert your disc into your drive. Scroll Source drive and select the drive where your disk.

  • Pull down the list then target player and choose Image Recorder.

  • Then click the Copy button.

  • In the window that opens, choose where to put the disk image and give it a name. Note that Nero created an image in NRG. Click the Save button.

  • Your CD or DVD is copied to your hard disk as a disk image format NRG.

  • Once the copy is complete, click OK. You can close Nero.

Create a disk image with CDBurnerXP:

CDBurnerXP is a free burning software that lets you create and burn disc images in ISO format, the standard format of disk images (and also most widespread).
  • Start CDBurnerXP by clicking on the shortcut on the desktop.

  • Click the Create CD / DVD data.

  • Pull down the File menu and then click the Copy command disk ISO.

  • Insert the disc to be copied into your drive and select it in the Select Source Player.

  • Pull down the Select then the target element and select the hard drive.

  • Then click the button ... the area for the ISO image file and choose where to store the image of your CD or DVD on your hard drive. Give a name to the image then click the Save button.

  • Then click the Copy button on the disc.

  • Your CD or DVD is copied to your hard drive as a disk image in ISO format.

  • Click the OK button and then click Cancel when done.

Burning a disk / ISO image:

You have gotten a picture of a CD or DVD in ISO format? You can burn a CD or DVD blank and thus have a copy of the original disc.

With Nero:

Nero lets you burn disc images in ISO format, but also the IMG or NRG.
  • Insert a blank disc into your drive.

  • Start Nero SmartStart.

  • Open the Save section.

  • Then click the Burn Image command disk.

  • Select your hard disk image format disc ISO or NRG you want to burn and click the Open button.

  • Pull down the list then select your current burner CD / DVD.

  • Then click the Burn button to start burning your CD or DVD. After a few minutes, you have a copy of the original disc.

With CDBurnerXP:
  • Start CDBurnerXP by clicking on the shortcut on the desktop.

  • Click the Create CD / DVD data.

  • Insert a blank CD or DVD into your drive.

  • Pull down the File menu and then click the Burn Disc command from the ISO file.

  • In the window that opens click on the button ....

  • Select your hard disk image in ISO format you wish to burn and click the Open button.

  • Select the method of etching Disc at Once and then click the Burn Disc button.

  • Your disk is then etched from the disk image. After a few minutes you have an identical copy of the original disc. Once the burning is complete, click OK and close the windows.

Mount a disk image:

You have a disk image and you want to access content on your computer. No need to burn it: simply mount it. Thus, the freeware Daemon Tools you can emulate one or several CD or DVD using a disk image. Everything happens in Windows as if you had a new CD or DVD disc with the image etched into it, so it is not.
  • Download free Daemon Tools.

  • Install the software by running the downloaded file.

  • Follow the instructions in the installation wizard.

  • When the wizard asks you to restart your computer, click the OK button.

  • Once your computer restarts, the installation of Daemon Tools continues. Click Finish once the installation is complete.

  • Daemon Tool is proposing to install a toolbar to your browser. Reject the operation by clicking the Cancel button in the window that appears.

  • Run Daemon Tools by clicking the Start button, click All Programs, then click on DAEMON Tools DAEMON Tools.

  • A new icon is housed in the taskbar, next to the clock. Click on it with the right mouse button and then choose Virtual CD / DVD-Rom.

  • Click on Device 0 and then Mount image.

  • Then select the image file to mount as a drive in Windows. Click the Open button.

  • Then open My Computer: A new CD is present.

  • You can then manipulate the various files on the disk as if it were a real disk that you inserted in your drive.
