Utilising computer while you are sleeping

I have set up a brand new Dell Studio One 19 desktop computer. My query is how can I utilize my Dell desktop when I am sleeping. I was told that there are various task which the computer can perform when the user is actually sleeping this includes scheduling updates, downloads and repairing hard disks. But I do not know how to actually do all this. Though I have got Windows 7 installed I may downgrade to Windows Vista as I am more used to it. My computer specifications are as follows:
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
  • Operating System: Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
  • RAM: 2 gigs DDR2.
  • Hard drive: 500 gigs
  • Graphics: Integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400
  • Monitor: 18.5 inch display.

Re: Utilising computer while you are sleeping

It is a recommended practice to schedule all your updates while you are sleeping. Once you have finished working, you can then let the computer perform the scheduled task while you go to bed. To schedule any task at a specified time make use of the Scheduled Task Utility in System Tools. This utility can be used to schedule your updates as well as downloads.

Backup schedule

You may make use of the Windows Back-up Tools in the Scheduled
Task Wizard
or any third party backup tool to schedule your backup at a specified time. You may make use of the Data Backup Software which is a third party tool to schedule data backup. This software will help you to schedule your backup data task as and when required.

Disk Defragmentation Process

Usually the Disk Defragmentation Process takes alot of time to defragment your hard drive with all its drive. For this you may sort it out by scheduling the Disk Defragmentation Process in the Schedule Task Wizard of Windows. Select a time where in you would be sleeping and the computer can perform the Disk Defragmentation Process and when it finishes the Disk Defragmentation Process it can be scheduled to Turn Off by itself.

Schedule Windows Update

I using a Windows XP operating System on my desktop computer. I make use of the time I sleep to update my Windows operating System to keep my system updated. For this I make use of the Automatic updates feature type sysdm.cpl in the run box. And browse to the Automatic Updates Tab. In here select the Automatic Updates check box and set the time at which the updates are to installed.
