How to backup GMail messages

In recent months, Google Mail has experienced several incidents, making it inaccessible. However, during such failures, you can not access your messages. Here is how to fix it.

To avoid this, you'd better make a regular backup of their messages. That's what makes GMail Backup, a free application that you find on the site www.gmail-backup.com/download.
  1. Install the program and run it.
  2. Enter your username (eg abc@gmail.com) and your password.
  3. Click on Directory to select the backup folder of your messages.
  4. Finally, click OK, then Backup. If you receive an error message, start your browser, go to your Gmail page and click on Settings and then Forwarding and POP/IMAP. Activate, if it is not, Enable IMAP.

Once the transfer is complete, you will find in the selected folder all messages as EML files, readable by Outlook, Windows Mail and most email programs. The Restore button (in the same window as the backup button) lets you put all your messages in Gmail.

You canc even use G-Archiver. G-Archiver provides one click Gmail backup solution. G-Archiver allows you to free up additional storage space beyond Gmail's storage limit. Its easy to use and requires no technical knowledge. G-Archiver even supports multiple Gmail accounts and also allows you to download file attachments and embedded files.

Re: How to backup GMail messages

You can even use simple POP3 backup method in your Outlook to save your Gmail messages. Gmail uses POP3 port number 995 and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) port number 465. These settings are not the default for a POP3 account in Outlook and require you to modify account settings in Outlook. Thus you can use Outlook and Gmail and continue with your messages if GMail is having any glitches.
