How to access my Group Policy Settings on Windows XP

If you do not like some of the default settings of Windows XP, you can use the Group Policy Editor. Group Policy defines a user and/or computer configurations for groups of users and computers. You create a specific desktop configuration for a particular group of users and computers by using the Group Policy Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in.

How to Start the Group Policy Editor

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type mmc, and then click OK.
3. On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.
4. Click Add.
5. Under Available Stand-alone Snap-ins, click Group Policy, and then click Add.
6. If you do not want to edit the Local Computer policy, click Browse to locate the group policy object that you want. Supply your user name and password if prompted, and then when you return to the Select Group Policy Object dialog box, click Finish.
7. Click Close, and then in the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box, click OK.

How to access Group Policy Settings

To use the group policy editor, follow these steps:

1. Expand the GPO that you want. For example, Local Computer Policy.
2. Expand the configuration item that you want. For example, Computer Configuration.
3. Expand the sub-item that you want. For example, Windows Settings.
4. Navigate to the folder that contains the policy setting that you want. The policy items are displayed in the right pane on the Group Policy Editor snap-in.
5. In the Setting list, double-click the policy item that you want.
6. Edit the settings of the policy in the dialog box that appears, and then click OK.
7. When you are finished, quit the MMC.

Thank you so much for your kind help Itronix. It was very kind of your to spend so much of time, energy and efforts in typing this entire thread just to help people like me. Yesterday i was facing some problem installing few software and read somewhere that changing Group policy settings actually helps you to solve this kind of issue. Then i went through your thread and did just exactly as you have mentioned and luckily my problem got solved. Your thread just came as a life saver for me. So once again, Thank you a lot.
