Pandora Recovery is a powerful free tool that provides its users an effective way to attempt recovery of permanently deleted files. And that does not mean restoration of a file from Recycle Bin.
Pandora Recovery actually recovers files permanently removed from Recycle Bin, files originally deleted using Shift + Delete keys bypassing Recycle Bin and files deleted from DOS prompt.

Pandora Recovery is not a backup tool - it can recover files that have been deleted months before Pandora Recovery was installed.
And while the likelihood of successful recovery is negatively affected by the time passed since the deletion of files Pandora Recovery users were able to recover files deleted more than five years after deletion!

    • Restoration

Restoration is a free toll which can restore files which are deleted from the recycle bin or deleted while holding down the Shift key by mistake

Conversely, Restoration, has another function that makes it almost impossible to restore all deleted files.
You can use it after deletion of confidential documents, embarrassing files and so on.

You don't have to install it, so it doesn't leave any garbage in the PC.
(You can also run it from a floppy disk.)
Even if a file seems to be restored, there is no guarantee that the contents are correct.

    • TestDisk & PhotoRec

TestDisk was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally erasing your Partition Table).

TestDisk is a free and useful program which queries the BIOS ( DOS/Win9x) or the OS ( Linux, FreeBSD) in order to find the Hard Disks and their characteristics ( LBA size and CHS geometry). TestDisk does a quick check of your disk's structure and compares it with your Partition Table for entry errors. If the Partition Table has entry errors, TestDisk can repair them. If you have missing partitions or a completely empty Partition Table, TestDisk can search for partitions and create a new Table or even a new MBR if necessary.

This is more hypothetical, i have no need to recover files and i'm well aware of the software available which does it (PS Glary utilities is a great free one)
I'm curious as to how the space is deleted, yet sometimes a whole file can be recovered. It is simply a case that the memory is not deleted, it is just eligable to be over written and therefore classed as free?

What exact problem are you talking? And what space are you talking about that is deleted? Normally, when the hard disk becomes old, because of continous data copying and deleting, the MBR of the hard disk gets corrupted and therefore space in this corrupted mbr are deleted and cannot be used. However there are free partition software that can be used to recover this corrupted mbr.
