Windows Vista automatically defragments hard disks without asking anything to anyone and most importantly, without asking the user. If you use a third party defragmentation software, or if you prefer to manually perform maintenance tasks, here's how to take orders.

Unlike Windows XP, the disk defragmenter of Vista is activated automatically and is totally silent, you could even tell the user's knowledge. In a classic, it is a very good thing. The performance of Windows and discs remain stable even if the user does not have anything in terms of system maintenance.

On the other hand, this behavior is not only frustrating for those who like to have total control over what happens on their PC, but also risky if the user has installed third party tools for defragmentation (it may be that there a conflict between defragmentation methods used).

Finally, the defragmenter in Vista works well on laptops (which eventually leads to overconsumption), and even on disks with flash memory SSD (which is unnecessary and reduces the life of the SSD).

It is therefore important to know how to disable automatic defragmentation in Vista:

- Open the Start menu of Vista (brief pressure on the [Windows]).

- Type "Defrag" in the search box.

- Click on Disk Defragmenter.

- Uncheck the "Run scheduled (recommended)".

- Click OK to confirm the operation.

Now you can use the hassle-free defragmenter of your choice, or manually start the defragmenter:

- Or by calling the Start menu by clicking the Defragment Now button

- Or by running the command line (using "administrator"):
DEFRAG C: -v -w

(replace C: with D: or any other partition to defragment).
