First try this go to File > Open and change the "file of type" to Word 97-2002 and see if that works. If its not working try this steps:-

    1. Start Microsoft Works and open the document that you want to convert to a Word document.

    2. Choose the "File" menu and click "Save As" to bring up the "Save As" dialog box. Browse to choose which folder you would like to save this document in.

    3. Under the "Save as Type" option in the "Save As" dialog box choose "Rich Text Format" or "RTF." This indicates that you want to re-save the current Work document as a Rich Text Format document that can open in Microsoft Word.

    4. Start Microsoft Word Version 6, 95 or 97, choose the "File" menu and click "Open" to bring up the "Open" dialog box.

    5. Use the "Look In" drop-down menu and file navigation to find the folder that contains the prior Works document that you have just saved in rich text format.

    6. Choose "Rich Text Format" from the "Files of Type" drop-down list to display the rich text format documents that reside in the open folder.

    7. Click to select the file you want to open and click the "Open" button to close the "Open" dialog box and open the newly converted works document in Word. You can now save the document in Word .doc format.

    3. Click the Other Documents tab.
    4. Click Batch Conversion Wizard, and then click OK.
    5. When you are prompted to insert the Microsoft Word 2000 CD-ROM, do so, and then click OK.
    6. Follow the instructions on the screen to run the Conversion Wizard.
