How to evaluate the performance of your PC over other similar machines? How to evaluate the performance of your virtual machines compared to the host machine? How to evaluate the performance of your machine running Linux and Windows? How to compare the performance of your PC to your Mac? Here is the answer.

Geekbench

Geekbench is a program that evaluates the performance (in both 32 bits and 64 bits) from the heart of your machine, ie the set formed by the central processor, chipset and memory. The software does not, therefore, the devices: it does not measure the amount of disk access, or graphics performance. However, it really takes into account the specifics of the processor and the chipset and its performance index is very relevant to measure the differences between multi-core processors, making the software much from the power theoretically available.

The other peculiarity of Geekbench is to be multi-platform. Therefore, it becomes possible to actually compare the performance of your PC in various Linux distributions but also between Linux distributions and Windows. The software is also available for MacOS X.

Because it operates directly as the power available, it is also useful for evaluating the performance of different virtualization software, but also between virtual machines and the host machine.

- Download and install Geekbench.

- The program installs two versions: Geekbench (32-bit) and Geekbench (64-bit). From the Start menu, run Geekbench (32-bit)..

- Click "Try Geekbench".

- The welcome screen reminds the system detected, the processor detected, memory detected, and the model of PC.

- Before running the tests, make sure you have no other application launched.

- To run the tests, simply click the button [Run Benchmarks].

- After a few minutes, the results are displayed. You can save the XML file by clicking the SAVE button

- You can also publish your results online to compare to other by clicking on the SUBMIT button. The web browser will then open with the display of your results. Click on the "Chart performance of similar systems" to compare your system against those who are similar. By opening an account on the service (Register link), you can save this result as your profile. You can store multiple results from one profile and compare them directly on the website. This is very useful to compare the results of several different machines, or compare the performance of your machine with that of a friend that you just submitted to the Geekbench tests.

Note:
The software is also able to compare the theoretical performance between modes 32-bit and 64 bit processors. But the free version is limited to assessing only 32 bits. Access to statistical tests and 64-bit is available only to users of a registered version.
