What is MD5?
MD5 (Message-Digest Algorithm 5) is a widely used cryptographic hash function with a 128-bit hash value. As an Internet standard (RFC 1321), MD5 has been employed in a wide variety of security applications, and is also commonly used to check the integrity of files. An MD5 hash is typically expressed as a 32 digit hexadecimal number. MD5 was designed by Ron Rivest in 1991 to replace an earlier hash function that is MD4.
Whenever you download a larger file, the website gives you a MD5 code that is encrypted to verify the file's integrity. You are required to verify the code with your downloaded file to make sure that your download is not tampered with! But how are you suppose to do that? Here is a simple way! Download MD5 Calculator. [Attached Below].
- Unzip the Calculator and run it. now browse and open the file from the calculator.
- Click on MD5 button and a code will be generated.
- Now verify the generated MD5 code with the code provided by the download website.
- If it matches your download is not tampered and is valid.
