The Stop button in Windows Vista does not put off the computer, in fact it is a hibernation. It is better to switch off the computer to reduce electricity consumption. For former users of XP, this button is a real curse.

You can change the behavior of the Stop button. To do this:

  • Go to "Control Panel"
  • Select "System and Maintenance"
  • Select "Power Options"
  • Click on "Change Plan Settings" link
  • Click on "Change Advanced Power Settings" link
  • Expand "Power button and lid". From here, you can change the options:

    • Power button action - Changes the hardware power button action
    • Start menu power button - Changes the power button on the Start Menu

  • Expand "Start menu power button"
  • In the drop-down list that appears, select "Shut down"
  • Click on "OK" button
