When installing new hardware or software, some settings are stored in the registry and it can happen to damage and prevent access to important functions of Windows. It can also damage the registry by amending and making a mistake.

In these cases, a reinstallation of Windows and software is often the only solution.
To avoid this, we recommend making a backup of the registry before making any manipulation on your PC.

Windows 95
  • Open the Registry Editor
  • The window that opens corresponds to register. Open the registry database, and click Export file the registry.
  • In the window that opens, you must choose where and under what name to save the file. In the drop-down list named in, for example, choose your desktop and name, I advise you to choose a name explicitly detailing why and when you saved the file. For example: registre_avant-installation-firefox_2007-11-02-a-11.30.
  • Click Save to save the file.
  • You can copy this file, and keep in a safe place in case you have a problem later.


Windows 98
  • Open the Registry Editor
  • The window that opens corresponds to register. Open the Registry menu, and click Export Registry File.
  • In the window that opens, you must choose where and under what name to save the file. In the drop-down list named in, for example, choose your desktop and name, I advise you to choose a name explicitly detailing why and when you saved the file. For example: registre_avant-installation-firefox_2007-11-02-a-11.30.
  • Click Save to save the file
  • You can copy this file, and keep in a safe place in case you have a problem later.


Windows Vista / Windows XP / Windows 2000 / Windows NT

  • Open the Registry Editor
  • The window that opens corresponds to register. Open the File menu, then click Export
  • In the window that opens, you must choose where and under what name to save the file. In the Save In drop-down list, choose such as your office, and as a noun, I advise you to choose a name explicitly detailing why and when you saved the file. For example: registre_avant-installation-firefox_2007-11-02-a-11.30.
  • Check that box is checked in all range of export, otherwise the register will not be saved completely!
  • Click Save to make the backup.
  • You can copy this file, and keep in a safe place in case you have a problem later.


Restore the registry in case of problems

  • Just open the file created (by double-clicking on it).
  • In this manner, the registry will regain its status on the date of your backup.
  • If double-clicking does not open again the registry editor and use the Import (in the File menu) to replace damaged by the registry backup. Simply select the backup.
