Windows XP and Vista include a tool to compress files and folders to make room on the hard disk. Feel free to use, at least to reduce the size of files you rarely see. The following manipulations apply to Windows XP and Vista.

Step 1 - Open the Start menu
  • and click My Computer.

  • Pick the hard drive where the files or folders to compress, and double-click its icon.

  • Scroll to the item (file or folder) to compress on this disc, and then click the right mouse button.



Step 2 - A menu appears:

  • choose Properties from the list of proposed actions.

  • Then click on the Advanced button at the bottom of the window.

  • In the Attributes section compression or encryption, check the Compress contents to minimize the disk space requirements.

  • Validate the OK button
