Almost exactly two years ago I was talking about Rockbox, an open source alternative firmware that supports some of the audio players more popular in the market, and others not so.
Rockbox adds features such as incredible video playback, support of topics, file playback OGG, FLAC, AC3, WMA, ...; games like Doom or Sudoku; applications, such as text editor or calculator; spoken menus, ReplayGain (adjust the volume of songs so that all have similar levels of volume), support for cover art, and a lot of things.
Moreover now, with the publication of Rockbox 3.0, installing this firmware is even simpler thanks to a small application for Windows, Mac OS and Linux called Rockbox Utility, which only have to connect the player to your computer, select the model (or let the application detecte it automatically), and click on "Complete Installation".
