Some great tips to increase your productivity on Windows Vista

Windows Vista has some of the features present in it that might increase your efficiency and productivity of doing work which other OS lacks. Here is a list of features which you may or may not be knowing and are eager to know more about it. Have a look over here.

    1. Large icons on Vista

In Windows Vista, an improvement was made to the icons. They may be much larger and more beautiful as that in earlier versions of Windows.

Of course, for large icons, you can always do: Right click on the desktop -> display -> large icons OR

when you're on the desktop, hold the Ctrl key and spin the wheel of your mouse up to see icons, and down to shrink.

    2. Share Folders in Vista

Like Windows XP, you can share any folder here by just right clicking on the folder and then clicking on Sharing feature. This will start a wizard allowing you to give your desired share name. In Vista, a new feature has been added along with this. Here you can also limit the total number of simultaneous users to your folder and also grant them permissions. So if you want to share your folder like you used to do in XP:

    • Right click on the folder and click Properties
    • Click Sharing -> Advanced Sharing
    • Share this folder and give your share name
    • You can set the permission and limit the total number of simultaneous users also

    5. Using Checkboxes to Select Files and Folders

Till now, on every Windows OS, in order to select multiple files we had to use CTRL or SHIFT keys. A small mistake could un-select them which is very annoying to most the users. Vista solves this issue by adding a small feature and allowing its user to mark and unmark folders as if you do in any mobile device.

    • On Left hand bar, click on Organize Menu
    • Choose Folders and Search Options
    • Select "Use Checkboxes to Select an Item" and close

This will enable your checkbox feature and allow you to see checkbox's on left top of every file.

    6. How to Shutdown your Windows Vista Computer at a particular time

If you wish to shutdown/restart your computer at a particular time, then this tip will help you a lot. You can use either of these methods.

    1) You can create a shortcut program to shutdown after a particular period of time as follows:

Right click on an empty area on your desktop, Select New -> Shortcut.
On Create Shortcut Wizard, type Shutdown -s -t 1800 and click Next. Name the shortcut : Shutdown and click Finish.

Here 1800 is 1800 secs or 30 mins or whatever you wish. After the specified period of time the Computer will automatically shutdown without a warning.

    2) Open Run and type: at 22:00 shutdown -s
A black window will pop up and disappear. A warning dialog box will then appear and your PC will start shutdown.

Note: Timings should be in 24 hour format.

    7. Resize your partition

Vista has an inbuilt Disk Management feature. It allows you to either increase or decrease your hard disk partitions without any loss of data. Thus there is no need of any third party tool to do this option.

On control panel, you will find Disk Management or Type partition. Select it and press enter. You will see a list of all drives. Select appropriate drive which you want to expand or shrink and go to Action, then All Tasks. You will now see options shrink and expand. Select as per your need and you are done.
