Finding a solution for the c00d11cd error
This error code, generated by Windows Media Player, is VERY annoying! Why?

Well it is a "GENERAL" error code..

And this makes trouble shooting the c00d11cd error more complicated.

So just as there are multiple reasons for getting this error, there are multiple solutions to the error!

Below are some of the more common that I have come across... This collection is in no particular order, nor is it exhaustive. BUT many of you will find a solution here on this page.

Some of the main causes for the c00d11cd error
Below are some of the most common reasons for this common error code AND
the solutions I, and others have found for them:

You can not play WMV or ASF media on a website with Internet Explorer's Media Bar turned on.

Internet Explorer has its own player for the Media Bar. To get around the c00d11cd error being generated you need to turn the Media Bar off. To disable Internet Explorer's (version 6) Media Bar click the Media button on the main Toolbar, then click "Media Options" in the new pane that opens. Now select "settings", and then uncheck "Play web media in the bar".

There is no need to restart your machine as this will take effect immediately.

You have a "playlist" on your PC that you are trying to copy to a CD-R. When you hit the copy button it goes straight to the c00d11cd error!

The most likely cause is DRM. Check the songs on your "playlist" to see if any of the content protected. To do this simply "right click" on each song, then select the "license tab". If any of the songs are protected then you can NOT copy them without the appropriate DRM authority. (DRM = Digital Rights Management) You will need to check with the site you purchased from to see the level of DRM used.

You have a "playlist" on your PC that you are trying to copy to another computer. When you try and play on the new computer it goes straight to the c00d11cd error!

The most likely cause is DRM. (DRM = Digital Rights Management)

It is likely you purchased and downloaded from a site Like Walmart.com Online stores like these set restrictions on what you can do with the .WMA files you download. It is likely that the DRM licence for your download restricts you copying to another PC. You will need to check with the site you purchased from to see the level of DRM used.

You can not copy songs from a CD in the CD drive to your hard disk. Windows Media Player generates the c00d11cd error.

The most likely cause is that something has gone wrong with the special file responsible for the "encoding". The name of the file is: wmadmoe.dll

The first thing we need to do is re-register this file with Windows XP. To do this go to the "Start Menu" and select "Run". Now type in the following: regsvr32 wmadmoe.dll

If this does not work then the file itself may be corrupt. To fix this go to the "Start Menu" again and select "Run". Now type in the following: sfc /scannow

This will now scan your XP machine to see if there are any corrupt system files. If there are any then XP will prompt you for the XP CD so it can get a new copy... This may help you resolve the c00d11cd error.

NB - This will get you up and running again, however due to some underlying problems with your installation you may actually need to re-install Windows Media Player.

You can not copy a CD onto the hard drive, Windows Media Player generates the c00d11cd error. You also may notice that under "Copy Music" in "options" the hard drive location is missing and can not be updated.

Set the value by hand in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences

Registry String = CDRecordpath

Value = Path name of folder to store music on your hard drive e.g. C:\DOCUMENTS\Marc\My Documents\My Music

You can not play an MPEG2 file. Windows Media Player generates the c00d11cd error.

The most likely cause is that you do not have the correct codec installed to play back the file. Windows Media Player 9 will only NOT automatically download EVERY codec there is.

In the case of MPEG2 (or DVD) you MUST have an MPEG2 decoder on your system!

You can not play an SVCD file. Windows Media Player generates the c00d11cd error.

The most likely cause is that you do not have the correct codec installed to play back the file. MOST SVCD content has been encoded using MPEG2, therefore Windows Media Player 9 will need this codec already installed on the PC before it can playback the content.

You can not play a file that has been sent to you via email. Windows Media Player generates the c00d11cd error.

Windows Media Player does not like to play content when it is an email attachment. Please save the file onto your local drive, close the email application and Windows Media Player.

Now find the location of the file you just saved and double click. Windows Media Player should now be able to play your file with no problems.

You can not play an MP3 or WAV file. Windows Media Player generates the c00d11cd error.

I have seen Windows Media Player generate this error code when the name of the file is long or is long and contains spaces.

Please rename the file to a single word and keep under 6 characters. Now try again with Windows Media Player.

You can not play an AVI file you have downloaded from the Internet. Windows Media Player generates the c00d11cd error.

It is possible that you have an AVI file that is encoded with the DivX Codec and that you have a corrupt AVI header.

Search for the utility DivFix105 at Google.com and use this utility to rebuild the AVI header.

You can not copy music from your CD's onto your hard drive. Windows Media Player generates the c00d11cd error.

I have seen this happen on a number of occasions when the "Copy protect" box is checked.

This is NOT meant to happen, but to work around this issue try turning off this feature..

To turn copy protection off:

On the Tools menu, click Options.

Click the Copy Music tab.

Find the Copy protect music check box and clear the check box to turn it off.

You can not copy downloads from online music stores to a CD. Windows Media Player generates the c00d11cd error.

Please make sure you have actually played the music track BEFORE you try and copy to a CD-R. Until you do so Windows Media Player may not actually have the DRM license for that track installed.

You can not play MP3's. Windows Media Player generates the c00d11cd error.

Play the MP3 in WMP6.4 by going to Start -> Run -> and type in: mplayer2
click on a mp3 in explorer - WMP9 comes up with same error - so disable all formats mp3, wma, etc in options.
Start WMP6.4 again and enable all formats
WMP6.4 now comes up by clicking on an mp3 and works
Now REINSTALL WMP9 again
NOW IT WORKS! No error...

You can not play WMA/WMV using LaunchCast. Windows Media Player generates the c00d11cd error.

c00d11cd TIP
If you are stuck playing content, you can bring up the "old" media player 6.4 in XP by:

Start Menu -> run box -> , type in: mplayer2

I have often found this works when Windows Media Player 9 has problems!
