Hi,

I recieve an error while switching on my computer, the computer does not start. I tried to restart it 6 times, eventually it did start, but then when I tried to run Norton, it did not open. I asked my vendor, he said it's a virus. (obviously, idiot)

Any ideas which one this is and how I can remove it?

That's my sis.

if u can't boot into safe mode then its surely a virus(as far as i kno)....plz provide more details.

hacker_in how can he scan his hard disk online when it doesn't boot properly.

Avtar why not try slave ur HDD with ur Friends HDD as master and try cleaning the virus with Anit Virus software installed on his HDD.
WARNING: Be careful this might be risky.

It's actually my sister's computer and she described that to me. (cousin)

She says sometimes a blue screen would come up with red at the bottom with RESTART on it...

Okay some more information, I went over and saw the compy.

Looks messed up, the desktop comes, but then it throws up loads of Visual C++ errors and then some error in the XMS Memory.

What's up with it? It then hangs.

are you guys sure that it is a virus? *confused*
to me it looks like a memory problem.
i would say go to http://www.memtest86.com/ and download the software. create the bootable floppy or if you have re-writable CD then download the ISO and make a bootable CD (faster). test the RAM with the software and see if it is alright.
but if you are SURE that it is a virus then there is a simple solution. use rescue disks from your Norton AV or any other AV that you use. please don't tell me she never created rescue disks but if she did not then there is no other option but to bring the HD at your place and clean it.
boot the PC from them and clean it.

Vendor thinks it is a Memory problem too, he's taken the RAM with him.

Ferrari how about reading the complete post and then telling me if i am right or wrong.

The guy said "I tried to restart it 6 times, eventually it did start"

Eventually it starts means he can boot into windows and can eventually go online.
