Do the below thing. Close your Thunderbird and Go to Profile folder(it is automatically created by mozilla). Now just remove all the file with .msf extention(such as inbox.msf). see there will be two folder of such type, you need to delete all the folder with .MSF extension. Now restart TB and compact all the folder. Now check that Thunderbird is working fine. Hope this will solve your issue.

always perform the following thing to keep your Thunderbird working and avoid problem.
    1) Do not use the default profile name.
2)Check that your antivirus software isn't configured to delete your Inbox
3)Don't check for viruses in messages you send.
4)Don't keep a copy of your messages on the POP server without providing some way to automatically get rid of them later on
    5)Regularly compact your Inbox folder
    6)Regularly back up your profile.

Follow this instruction and your Thunderbird will work fine.

    Re: Thunderbird /temp/nsmail.tmp problem

Tb automatically creates 'nstmp' when it compact the folder. If TB is interrupted during compacting it will abort. Shutting down the process, Receiving new message this will interrupt the process. To avoid this problem switch to offline but this is stupid. You can also solve this problem by keeping you Inbox empty and make setting Go to Tools/Option/Advanced/Network and Disk Space/ Disk space/Compact disk space to a lower value.
always do this if getting some problem from Thunderbird.
