First thing i will advise you is to set the Google Chrome as the default browser in the system of yours and then follow the below given steps for performing the operation with the PDF files into the Google Chrome. Just associate the Google Chrome with the Adobe Reader.
    1. Close the Google Chorme
    2. Start the Adobe Reader.
    3. Click on Edit Menu
    4. Click on Preferences.
    5. Select Internet in the list
    6. Select "Display PDF in Browser"
    7. Click on OK
    8. Restart the Google Chrome.

I think that the update process is not done properly and that is why you are getting the issue with the same. If possible then try to update the Adobe Reader 9 again and see whether it is working for you or not. I hope that the update file will correct the problem related to the Adobe reader. So try this out to work with the issue.

Why you need the Adobe reader to read the PDF files for the Google Chrome browser when there is lots of Add on for the Google Chrome is available for PDF reading. Just download any of the Addon and enjoying reading the PDF files. The one which i am using is known as "Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer" which allow you to read the PDF on the Google Chrome.

gPDF is a handy tool to view PDF, DOC, DOCX and PPT files online. It scans webpages for links to these files, and sets them to open with Google Docs Viewer. You don’t need any desktop based PDF viewer (like : Adobe Reader) or Office Suit (like: MS Office) to open these files. Better than Google's official extension! For more click here.
