Acer Aspire 5740-6378 cannot connect to Internet using Wireless

I have recently bought an Acer Aspire 5740-6378 laptop which is installed with Windows 7 operating system. I have a small home network configured with a desktop computer which is directly connected to the Linksys wireless router and a shared printer. The operating system on the desktop computer is Windows XP. I am trying to connect the laptop to the router using Wireless connection, it shows that the laptop is connected to the network but it cant access the Internet. I cant figure out why my Acer Aspire 5740-6378 cannot connect to Internet using Wireless connection and hence need your help in solving this issue. Any suggestion/solutions about this topic are more than welcome.

Check the configuration of the router which you are trying to connect. To share the same internet connection between two computers the router has to be configured properly. If the router is not configured properly then the laptop will not be able to connect to the router. To check if the router is configured properly, login to the router and then go to the configuration page. Get the correct settings which are required for the router to share the connection from the ISP and check if the router is configured properly. Make the necessary changes if required and save the configuration. Reboot the router and connect the laptop to the router.

The default IP version of Windows 7 operating system is IPv6 while the default IP version of Windows XP is IPv4. Therefore if two computers working on Windows 7 and Windows XP are connected on the same network, there would be a protocol mismatch. To make both the computers work properly on the network, you will have to disable the IPv6 support of Windows 7. To disable the IPv6 support of Windows 7, Go to network connection wizard and open the LAN properties. Go to TCP/IP properties and then remove the check mark from the option which says "Enable IPv6 support". Save and apply the settings. Reboot the system and check if the laptop is able to connect to the router or not.

All the devices which are connected to the computer require a set of drivers to be installed on it. If the appropriate drivers are not installed on the computer the device will not work properly. To check if the appropriate drivers for the network adapter are installed and working on the computer, right click on My computer and select Device manager. Highlight the network adapter and check if there are any caution signs. Follow the troubleshooting procedure and check if the laptop connects to the router or not. If the troubleshooting does not help, you can try updating the drivers for the network adapter.

The Network interface card of the computer is responsible for establishing and maintaining the network connection. Therefore if the network interface card is faulty then the laptop will not be able to connect to the router. To check the network interface card of the laptop, type "ping 127.0.0.1" in the run tab and hit enter. Check if there are any errors in data sent and received. Ideally there should be no error. If there are errors then the NIC is faulty and needs to be replaced.

The devices which are connected to the router using Wireless connection are assigned IP address using DHCP which is running on the router. If the DHCP which is running on the router is not working properly then devices which are connected to the router will not be assigned IP address and hence the device will not be able to access all the resources of the network. Login to the router and then disable the DHCP. Re-enable the DHCP and save the settings. Save the configuration and reboot the router.
